My mom was a working mom in the 80’s (out of necessity not choice) and I saw what a raw deal it was. I was determined to be a SAHM or not at all and that’s what I did. I didn’t and don’t feel treated like dirt, but my only job for the last 15 years has been raising my children and running the house. It’s not actually a bad job if you don’t also have another job. I have two daughters and I will support any choice they make, but I will alert them to this reality.

So being a baby factory is supposed to cure the deficiencies in Social security and Medicare? Says no woman ever. Even the Chinese aren't having children, and they are way more collectivistic than Americans.

It’s not that people should go and have babies that they don’t want, it’s just that it’s going to be a natural consequence that social security and Medicare won’t be able to fund all of the elderly people. There will also probably not be enough nursing home and hospital workers to manage the elderly population. As for the Chinese, they now realize they messed up with the one-child policy.

Then the problem is with how SS and Medicare is structured, not because women are choosing to be childfree. Whoever thinks they can rely on SS alone to fund retirement is an idiot, and so people ought to look out for themselves and be wise with their money. It's not the govt's responsibility to look out for people in their old age if they're broke. Home aides are paid crap and if you want people to work these jobs, pay them a decent wage with benefits. The world population is actually growing, not decreasing so stop being alarmist.
