Is the solution for parents to move to small towns?

+ 1 million.

We should have concentrated efforts over the last two years on expanding hospitals and medical workforce.

I agree with this. There has to be some better long term planning. Clearly the healthcare system is not set up to handle a pandemic. But this will not be the last pandemic, it’s probably not even the last wave of this pandemic.

I have no idea how most people voted. We have an LGTBQ family member. Openly gay. No one cares. Our schools are open. No threats to close. Masks are not required anywhere, although many people choose to wear them. Most people are vaccinated. But, there is a lot of skepticism on the effectiveness.

We talk about family, travel, sports, weather, ……. Politics just doesn’t come up. I’m a very liberal dem living in what is a fairly conservative area. I’ve never felt uncomfortable.

The only real downside is lack of diversity. This is the whitest place I’ve ever lived. I don’t think I would have wanted to raise my kids here simply because of that.

It’s so funny how often very liberal whites find themselves living happily in very white areas, yet lament the homogeneity.

PP also claims no one cares that the LGTBQ family member is gay, but I'm betting that family member wouldn't agree. It's only PP who doesn't care, and probably has no insight into, how less white and straight people really feel in that town.

It’s a preference. I’m a liberal white person, but with POC children. Without my kids I would prefer a diverse area, but would still live in a mostly white area if everything else is good. It wouldn’t really affect my life. With POC children I will not move to an all
white area no matter how great it is otherwise because it would immensely affect their quality of life.

We wouldn't even be in this situation if everyone would just get vaccinated. And the only reason they aren't is because Republicans have morphed into some kind of anti-medicine cult.

How can you possibly believe this is about vaccination? Covid is spreading like wildfire, especially in highly vaccinated states and countries. At this point you have to be delusional to believe we just need to vaccinate more people.

Look at the data on hospitalized people. Most are unvaccinated. The main problem with Covid now is overwhelmed hospitals and it would be a much better situation if everyone were vaccinated.

Where are hospitals overwhelmed and by what measure?

The reality is that there are not the many intensive care beds at most hospitals. They can quickly reach capacity. Even per-pandemic hospitals would close for emergencies and ambulances would be routes to another site. Unvaccinated are the ones that are getting hit hardest with new variants and needing hospitalization.

For what it is worth you get can great healthcare at most mid and even small city hospitals. These people know the patients and their families. They want the best for their community. Unless you have a rare condition, you don’t need a Mayo or Cleveland Clinic.

I miss a lot about DC. We kept our home in NoVA just in case. But, I LOVE living in a small town right now. You rarely hear people talk about politics which is wonderful! People are cautious about covid, but not ridiculous. No one is staying home rocking back and forth in a closet. Schools are open. Masks are optional. Most people are vaccinated. Everything is pretty much normal here. It’s been so good for my family’s mental health. We are close to a huge university and outstanding medical facilities.

It’s like night and day. I’m still getting used to it.

Please "very liberal Dem"s, don't move to the fairly conservative areas. You have made your beds, now lie in them.

Yes, intensive care units are VERY expensive to run, and are basically designed to be at 75-80% capacity at all times. The number of beds needed to push that up to 95% is very small.

Rich liberals ran like hell to places where schools were open and life went on much as normal.

Only the poor and middle class liberals who couldn’t afford to retreat to a new house (or second house) in a nice purple or red spot still believe the propaganda lol.

Sad.

Or Funny, depending on your mood.
