DCPS Chancellor encouraging parents to talk about genocide for Thanksgiving

Anonymous
The chancellor is not doing a damn thing about making sure underprivileged kids get a good education. Easy to lecture others though.

Wake up. The country as you know it was built on exploiting certain peoples. Does knowing that and yet doing nothing about it help you sleep at night? Do you really want your kids to grow up ignorant? Believing in Santa is one thing but turning a blind eye to untold suffering of generations is quite another.

Then don't celebrate Thanksgiving. But don't tell the vast majority of Americans that they shouldn't be able to spend a day being grateful for this country. And if this country was "built on exploiting certain peoples," then I encourage you to go find a country whose history looks better. I'll wait.

All countries exploited others but you entirely missed the point and are ok with people currently being exploited as well.

Actually not all countries exploited others but that’s not a viable conversation in this country because Americans tend to not allow for the sliver of possibility they have been brainwashed.

Also I didn’t anything anything about not being grateful for the country or anything else. I’m very grateful, including for the many opportunities the US has afforded me and my family. But let’s not pretend what the corner stones of today’s American society are.

How to say I'm ignorant without saying I'm ignorant.

And I don't really have a problem with the email. I just think the bolded is idiotic.

While there is plenty to consider and lessons to be had from history, the spirit of Thanksgiving doesn’t need to be undermined by focusing, on that particular day, on human fallibility nor on politics.

Instead, the focus should be on gratitude, sharing, family and friends, and the good things humans can do, like grow and learn.

The Chancellor’s idiotic email is an almost comic example of wokeness gone awry.

Agree completely. And it’s because of positions like this that Youngkin was elected in Virginia.

No it wasn’t. Youngkin won because of an elaborate right-wing straw man about CRT being taught in schools and exasperation by northern Virginia mommies over closing schools during a deadly pandemic. And because Terry McAullife, who actually was a decent governor, ran a bad campaign.

I find your misogyny breathtaking every time I read it on DCUM.

Whatever side you think you are on, it is wrong.

I’m a progressive but this whole email was dumb. This is why the democrats are as screwed up as reublicams. The far left are determined to hector every single time someone has fun and isn’t woke. It’s thanksgiving. It’s a meal. We don’t talk about this history at all. I seriously doubt anyone is truly triggered by thanksgiving. And if they are they have led a charmed life. I get why democrats voted for Youngin.

Devoting one day a year to being thankful for our families, friends, and lives is "objectively stupid"...

That’s DCPS’s point. Make it about being thankful. Don’t make it about Native American mythology because the reality of that is pretty ugly.

Nobody makes it about mythology. Seriously do you o ow anyone talking about history during a meal and football?

Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday after the Union won at Gettysburg. It didn’t really have anything to do with Pilgrims and the like but the mythology — reinforced in schools, natch — took on a life of its own.

What "myths?" The facts of history are very well documented and thus very clear. The Pilgrims could not have made it without the help of the Wampanoag Indians, which is part of what is celebrated at Thanksgiving.

The Wampanoag made a conscious choice to try to befriend the pilgrims because the latter overwhelmingly had better arms technology. I'm as anti-imperialistic as it gets but if we're going to stop pretending the first feast was some genuine love-in, let's really learn about the from historians (including Wampanoag ones).

Yep. So, so sick of it. The DC Chancellor has much bigger fish to fry than this.

So you made the willful to come here to get your share of ill gotten gains? Go home. We don’t need immigrants that hate the country.

Totally inappropriate comments in his note.

My immigrant family doesn’t do anything for Thanksgiving.

Why are you here? Why should the country want you to be here?

I’m guessing someone not from DC felt the need to post this because people in Loudoun voted for McCauliff. Someone was told to sew discord about BS and didn’t realize this will never get far in DC except w non DC folk who are told to post on an anon message board.

Good luck killing your base off w covid and false flags.

Nahhh homie… not a progressive if you throw around terms like “far left” and get triggered by an email. An email. Let that sink in.
