DMV has very, very low standards for sandwiches

But once you have a real one somewhere else, you realize that the one at the Italian Store is not that good. Soggy, weird tasteless bread, and lower quality meats. Not to mention, very overpriced. The Italian Store is only popular because they have no competition and most people in Arlington don’t know squat about Italian and Italian-American food.

But if it were in Philadelphia you’d think it was better.

Mangialardos. G man.

So maybe stop spending so much time talking about “sandwich shops” and make your own. The suggestion that “Philly” has anything special is so grossly outdated.

What do you expect in some area where white oriole aspire to white, wasp blandness.

Why do people who move here from somewhere else expect that the food in every single category will be as good here as it was in places that are famous for that food? Its ridiculous. Ever tried a "Maryland crabcake" in Denver? Yeah, neither have I because I will be disappointed.

And it likely would be.

You guys gentrified DC so much that now there’s tons of overpriced hipster crap. Good international food-including some sandwiches-can be found in non fancy suburban places and many (dare I say) are actually found in strip malls.

Agree, because those outlying communities are where working-class immigrants can afford to live

PP here yup. But don't tell that to the DC snobs.

True, Philly sandwiches are the best. Ask anyone there where they get sandwiches - more than likely they will start singing the praises of … Wawa.

Why do so many people in this region give 4 and 5 star reviews to sandwich shops that churn out godawful messes? Maybe people here just have never had truly good breads and meats? The lion's share of shops in this region use terrible bread, then they use all sorts of nasty shredded lettuce, cheap cold cuts, and fake/highly processed cheeses to make their sandwiches and also looooooooooove to drench everything in mayo (so nasty!). Coming from Philly and NY, where they actually make good hoagies and other sandwiches, the DMV area produces some truly awful stuff that is more akin to dogfood in term of sandwiches.

Who are dogfood people? You may not like mayo but, it isn't "nasty" unless you are 12. And what else to do but accept what we have? We can't go to NY or Philly for a sandwich!

You need better reading comprehension and better quoting skills.

So, no answer, eh?

Where are you going to find sandwiches. I'm from Philly and can tell you where the good ones are.

A good sandwich starts with the bread. A hard crust and soft inside (like the hard roll from the Italian store -- and they are good if you order correctly. A capri with no lettuce is outstanding.)

We do not have a good jewish deli because we do not have good rye bread. Period. (I am jewish. NYC #1, So FLA #2 and Philly #3 for jewish /kosher delis).

A Jewish sandwich is meat on bread with deli mustard. Sour pickle on the side.

Italian adds veggies and cheese. (Jewish/kosher can not have cheese and meats).
