DMV has very, very low standards for sandwiches

Why do so many people in this region give 4 and 5 star reviews to sandwich shops that churn out godawful messes? Maybe people here just have never had truly good breads and meats? The lion's share of shops in this region use terrible bread, then they use all sorts of nasty shredded lettuce, cheap cold cuts, and fake/highly processed cheeses to make their sandwiches and also looooooooooove to drench everything in mayo (so nasty!). Coming from Philly and NY, where they actually make good hoagies and other sandwiches, the DMV area produces some truly awful stuff that is more akin to dogfood in term of sandwiches.

Where are you going to find sandwiches. I'm from Philly and can tell you where the good ones are.

Where are the good ones in this area? They better have good bread. Not that soft sugary crap w/ barely a Mallard reaction.

Wawa has good sandwiches, so does Publix in the south. Also, Royal Farms has good fried chicken and fried chciken sandwiches. Not everything good has to come from a fancy boutique deli place.

You know what is even worse? The mashed potatoes I am from Manhattan, and I have not found one good food bar with mashed potatoes. I used to stop at a random Korean deli on they way home and get great mashed potatoes, green beans, and cole slaw and call it dinner. You cannot find anything that good in this area.

I just discovered that place and it is good.

We do not have a good jewish deli because we do not have good rye bread. Period. (I am jewish. NYC #1, So FLA #2 and Philly #3 for jewish /kosher delis).

A Jewish sandwich is meat on bread with deli mustard. Sour pickle on the side.

Italian adds veggies and cheese. (Jewish/kosher can not have cheese and meats).

The Italian Store’s hard rolls are tasteless and too hard.

NYC native who has been here for 15+ years. I just want a consistently good, deli sandwich. I like Compliments Only, Mangialardo, Loeb's, Dukes etc. for what they bring to the table and I don't complain, but sometimes I just want a BASIC NY deli sandwich and I have never been able to find this is in DC! Any NY bodega would churn out a decent one and I used to go to a deli in Penn Station before getting on the train to DC just to have one for the ride or next day. Key components are 1) Fresh roll. NYC roll means a Kaiser and that's what I want 2) meats, preferably Boars Head and it should be cut/shaved when the sandwich is ordered, never before. 3) Huge range of toppings all done fresh to order.

I don't think the DMV doesn't have good sandwiches, but I do miss this and the ubiquity of this sandwich type!

Oh. My. Word. It’s just a sandwich. When I order out, I eat a proper meal. I can make a sandwich at home.

Any other Hampton Roads natives on? We need a Taste in DC for sandwiches!

My favorites are Capriotti's and Italian Store.

Anyone know where I can get something similar to a 3-way or 4-way from Skyline Chili in the DMV?? I miss that so much from when I lived in Cincinnati...

MOT here and this is why I don't keep Kosher. Meat and cheese tastes good. It does seems to be a general consensus that the bread is very important and has to do with the water (or wudder) .

Giolittli in Annapolis.

It’s less that they are not good, it’s that you expect different regions to have the exact same ingredients. Ex: Kaiser rolls - while tasty not something I want every day.

Nothing is more cringey than the NYCer banging on about bodega food. I've spent a lot of time in NYC and have never eaten anything particularly good at a bodega or a deli for that matter. And believe me I've been dragged to plenty by locals rhapsodizing about their favorites. I think this is a function of (a) the averages New Yorker's reflexive superiority complex and (b) people just liking the thing they are used to. The rest of us try it your thing expecting it to live up to your hype and think "eh.v Its not that the food in DC is not good. Its that your food back home isnt as good as you think it is.

Lol thank you!! This person obsessing over the “mallard” reaction was hilarious.
