We are Jews in the South

OP here. Sorry. Been away from DCUM for a bit.

It's not that I think schools in the South are more anti-sematic, but that some are more Christian, even if they are noted as being non-denominational schools. We are looking mostly in the south because my daughter wants to stay reasonably close to us geographically and the academic common market may offer us some ability to use in state tuition in various neighboring states. I am concerned because, having grown up in Ohio, but been based in MoCo for over 30 years, I had forgotten the level of religiosity that can exist, including many many many common folk who have never met a Jew. I am concerned, because, some schools, like University of N. Georgia and the U.S. Air Force Academy, have reputations as being highly evangelical that make it uncomfortable to be anything other than Evangelical. I am not looking for Jewish studies per se, but a place where a Jew does not daily have to explain or defend their faith and can find a shabbat service if they want to attend.

University of North Georgia and Air Force Academy? I don't mean to sound rude, but those don't seem like two schools that would be on the same college list.

US Air Force Academy is in CO, not in the South. There are Jews there, incl Rabbi Rappeport. They even have had talks given by the Israeli Air Attaché to the US. If your daughter is interested, she should have already started researching.
UNG’s standards for admission and the Academy’s standards for admission are very different, odd that you chose to mention those two schools together and deem them to have an evangelical bent.

Tulane, UGA, Vandy, Duke and Davidson should be on your list

My comment was not meant to equate those schools in any way except to demonstrate that heavy religious influence can be where you least expect it.

Even here, when I was at GW my roommate from northern Virginia asked me how I could be Jewish because I had blond hair and blue eyes. She actually believed that Jews could only have black hair and dark eyes. I asked for a roommate transfer but I did not leave the college. Southern tend to ask what church you belong to within the first 5 minutes of meeting so be prepared for that.

This is not going to happen in college. I’ve lived in the South for all but a few years of my adult life and can only think of one time a newly introduced person brought up church.

Also grew up in the south. I assume these stories about being asked what church they attended occurred is very rural and lower income communities. Where I grew up, one would be more likely asked where they went to college or if they belong to the country club.

Perfect -- just like Jews in MoCo.

+1. Also in south. They don't ask about church.

I've found that many people who post on this board have "knowledge" of the South that is at least 20-30 years out of date.
I was super active in Hillel at UNC 30 years ago, and nobody asked me what church I went to. Nor did I ever experience anti-Semitism (other then one drunk idiot in a bar, who I punched).

I’m not gonna lie….I am shocked when I hear that Jewish kids go to non t30s, non t10 slacs, non t5 publics…

…I know a lot of Jewish people and mostly date Jewish women and I have never come across a Jewish person that isn’t of that academic background

maybe it's just your circle of rich people ... that's bigger factor in T20
