Public school, right? Led by students? Sure. Led by an adult staff member, no. And I’m a practicing Catholic. |
I used to coach a high school sports team. There was a group of seniors who also did a church group together outside of school. They started praying before games in a small group, which I didn’t have a problem with. However, this quickly evolved into a sort of clique within the team. They would invite underclassmen to join them, and the younger members were so excited to get attention from the popular seniors. They also didn’t invite certain team members (all the less-popular girls) and did things to highlight this exclusion like getting matching water bottles, holding breakfasts on game days, sleepovers after the game, etc. They even had a name for themselves. Since it was only girls on my team, I felt like it was a bit inappropriate. Parents of non-Christian team members complained. They whole thing was very grey.
I am not Christian and it made me very uncomfortable. The parents girls who were the ring leaders were absolutely irate when I raised concern. |
