Some of you are creepy AF expecting people to stand there during something they don't want while you do something you do.
Strong Kavanaugh vibe. |
+1 I'm Christian and this would be awkward AF at a public school event. I can't see why someone would want to deliberately make a lot of people uncomfortable but I guess that's the main goal of the "own the libs" crowd. |
What now? Leaving aside the other good points that have been raised, you think that all religions think god is male and a father-like figure? How ignorant are you? You think there is a Jew on the planet who would be comfortable with this prayer formulation? (Not even gonna touch the Wiccan thing.) |
Okay, I'll bite. I'm Eastern Orthodox. If my parish had a youth sports activity or a parish school with sports teams, I'd be fine with them doing a prayer. That would be great. But that's because all the families involved would have consented to that sort of thing by signing up their kids. I have no desire to engage in performative religion at secular events where most people will probably not be interested or be actively opposed. In fact, I'm pretty sure Jesus had some harsh words for people who made a big show of praying in front of others. |
Sure! Let's have public prayer before games! Any why not before a movie starts? Before a haircut? Before you get your printouts done at FedEx? Let's make everyone stop what they are doing to watch you perform your personal religion!
The person who called pre-game prayers a christian "flex" had it right. |
Yeah, and also this particular boarding school was in BRITAIN, where the US Constitution doesn't govern. FFS, PP. |
No. Separation of church and state. It would not be appropriate to have a pre-game prayer. |
It’s not required |
This is cultural. KY should be able to keep doing it but no this would not be appropriate in our more diverse and less religious DC area. The fact that it does not fit here though does not mean it is wrong for other more homogeneous areas of the country to do it. |
It wouldn't even be on my radar because my kids don't go to schools in LCPS. Did you know there are more school districts in northern VA than just LCPS (and FCPS?) Very self absorbed. |
absolutely not. totally inappropriate unless you rotate different faiths. |
No, they would say because we all have different religions/beliefs (including atheism) we don't need to have a prayer. I am fine with a moment of silence as that is truly inclusive. |
It's more common than you think. I once attended a game at the University of Tennessee. There was a prayer led on the PA system for the whole stadium before the anthem. Talk about indoctrination. |
Matthew 6:5
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward." I'm a Christian and the idea of starting public school events with a prayer feels really weird and wrong. I went to a Catholic college and attended dorm Mass and didn't mind that some professors started class with a prayer. Because everyone agreed to that kind of thing by enrolling. But why on earth would we do that at a public school football game? It would feel so performative and alienating. |
I did pray when I was getting printing out something at FedEx cause I found a card in the parking lot and had .50 cents enough for what I needed printed. haha |
