Would you be okay with a PRE game prayer? o

Some of you are creepy AF expecting people to stand there during something they don't want while you do something you do.

Strong Kavanaugh vibe.

+1 I'm Christian and this would be awkward AF at a public school event. I can't see why someone would want to deliberately make a lot of people uncomfortable but I guess that's the main goal of the "own the libs" crowd.

OH no it would not be "nice"

Which religion would you like? Muslem, Buddest, Jewish, Catholic, Wicka, etc...

I believe we all believe in GOD, so we say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Even if you are Muslim, Jewish, Wicka we still believe in one God.

What now? Leaving aside the other good points that have been raised, you think that all religions think god is male and a father-like figure? How ignorant are you? You think there is a Jew on the planet who would be comfortable with this prayer formulation? (Not even gonna touch the Wiccan thing.)

Okay, I'll bite. I'm Eastern Orthodox. If my parish had a youth sports activity or a parish school with sports teams, I'd be fine with them doing a prayer. That would be great. But that's because all the families involved would have consented to that sort of thing by signing up their kids. I have no desire to engage in performative religion at secular events where most people will probably not be interested or be actively opposed. In fact, I'm pretty sure Jesus had some harsh words for people who made a big show of praying in front of others.

Sure! Let's have public prayer before games! Any why not before a movie starts? Before a haircut? Before you get your printouts done at FedEx? Let's make everyone stop what they are doing to watch you perform your personal religion!

The person who called pre-game prayers a christian "flex" had it right.

I went to British boarding school, complete with prayerful assembly, religion study and grace before meals. It was in a particular time and place, and I accepted it.

However, in our area, in our time, this is not acceptable.

Private school is different, plenty of private schools have prayer. There is a HUGE difference between what is allowed when parents choose for their children versus publicly-funded, government-run schools.

Yeah, and also this particular boarding school was in BRITAIN, where the US Constitution doesn't govern. FFS, PP.

No. Separation of church and state. It would not be appropriate to have a pre-game prayer.

Anonymous wrote:Absolutely not. Religion has no place in any school-related event.

It’s not required

This is cultural. KY should be able to keep doing it but no this would not be appropriate in our more diverse and less religious DC area. The fact that it does not fit here though does not mean it is wrong for other more homogeneous areas of the country to do it.

I was in Eastern KY, and they pray to the lord before the start of the football game. How would react if we did that in LCPS?

It wouldn't even be on my radar because my kids don't go to schools in LCPS. Did you know there are more school districts in northern VA than just LCPS (and FCPS?)

Very self absorbed.

absolutely not. totally inappropriate unless you rotate different faiths.

Forcing a kid to set themselves apart as different based on their religious beliefs is just wrong.

LOL

clearly you have never seen this done.

The students aren't all saying a prayer at the same time, they just stand there quietly, and there is someone who says a prayer or blessing or chant or whatever. They are all standing their silently.
so my point is kids who don't want to participate should just not disrupt them with loud talking and so on while it's going on. It's basic respect of a group. Don't speak when someone else is speaking.

I know that in APS parents would complain about a Christian prayer but would say a Jewish or Muslim prayer was ok. Because that's how they show how woke they are and prove they don't like Trump
And I wish I was joking.

And like I said, I am fine with any religion prayer or blessing.

No, they would say because we all have different religions/beliefs (including atheism) we don't need to have a prayer. I am fine with a moment of silence as that is truly inclusive.

It's more common than you think.

I once attended a game at the University of Tennessee. There was a prayer led on the PA system for the whole stadium before the anthem.

Talk about indoctrination.

Matthew 6:5
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward."

I'm a Christian and the idea of starting public school events with a prayer feels really weird and wrong. I went to a Catholic college and attended dorm Mass and didn't mind that some professors started class with a prayer. Because everyone agreed to that kind of thing by enrolling. But why on earth would we do that at a public school football game? It would feel so performative and alienating.

I did pray when I was getting printing out something at FedEx cause I found a card in the parking lot and had .50 cents enough for what I needed printed. haha
