If there isn't mental illness or another issue I would give 2 options.
1. You will pay rent. It will be below market rate. To repay me for this generosity you are cleaning/doing grocery shopping/etc. 2. You have 1 month to pack up and leave. |
| Tell them a list of chores each week, pay rent, get a job or you'll drop them off at a homeless shelter. |
| How old is the child? If this is a 19 year old college student who turns into a lazy sloth at home in the summer of the pandemic, I'd be lenient. If this is a 35 year old unemployed kid living in my basement, I would take a different approach. |
Would #2 work before COVID ends? |
This. |
Yes. |
Uh no. There are tons of jobs for 19 year old college students right now. Literally everywhere. |
Yes. Tons of people couch surf. |
Why not? Apartments are still being rented. Adult child can couch surf elsewhere. |
|
Detail could help. Age? Did s/he finish college? Drop out? What was the last job? What else is going on?
|
| Need more info before we can give advice. Is the kid depressed? Significant other? Are they educated? How old? Is this something new due to a setback or has always been like this. |
| OP. They're 23 and have been diagnosed with ADHD, depression, and anxiety. They've seen a therapist in the past but don't want to continue seeing one. |
Well then that would be a condition of their living off of you. Therapy and meds. |
|
OP again. They're not in a relationship. They graduated from college this year after 5 years--struggled with motivation in HS and college due to depression, ADHD, and anxiety that I mentioned earlier, but were still able to maintain relatively high GPA because of the structure and accommodations. The depression has worsened this summer. So this level of lack of motivation is new, but the underlying issues were present before. They had no jobs in HS or college.
Posting this for my sister who has asked for advice and is okay with me posting. I have no idea what advice to give. |
