Can we put the crib in the living room?

We live in a very small one bedroom apartment (500 sq feet). Our bedroom fits a queen bed and an armoire but not much else. Our options are (1) throw out the armoire and fit a crib there (but this would mean I would have to throw out 80% of my clothes- storage would be too expensive) (2) place the crib in the living room (right outside our bedroom- literally 3 feet from where we sleep). I am leaning towards (2) because we really need the armoire, but would baby be able to sleep soundly in the living room? After she goes to bed in the evening, would we have to be really quiet since we can’t just close the door? Would the lights in the living room bother her? We could fit a bassinet in the bedroom for the first six months if necessary but they outgrow those so fast.

Sure, you can do this! It's so common to put the crib in the living room in places like Manhattan where apartments are small.

Many babies can sleep just fine in the room with lights and normal talking noise.

Of course it's OK for the crib to be in the living room. It's no different than a baby in a different bedroom.

It’s a small space so it’s probably ok. Have you considered a small bassinet for the first few months before a crib? That should fit between the wall and your side of the bed for ease of getting during the night.

Get a mini crib. And if you're using a pack n play long term, get a real mattress for it (sold on amazon).

The baby would be fine in the living room. As to whether she would sleep well there, that is one of those things that really depends on the baby. Some sleep through anything others do not. You may have to spend some time in your bedroom while the baby is settling down but that is still what I would do. What are your plans for when they are older?

In a different bedroom you can shut the door to block out some noise, turn off the lights. Just wondering if it will be tough for baby to stay asleep with all the lights on, tv in the background, kettle whistling, cooking, people talking etc. We won’t be excessively loud but also don’t want to be tiptoeing around every night.

We also have a small space and think we are doing a bassinet for the first few weeks/months plus a mini crib on wheels that we can easily move back and forth.

Can you put the dresser in the living room?
Yes, the baby needs total darkness to sleep. It's part of how you teach them to go to sleep.
Yes, you can put the crib in the living room. Why not? It's your baby - you can put them anywhere in your home that you want.

We could but it would block off one of windows because of its height.

I found that some light was better for sleep training. Not disagreeing but providing another input to show babies are unique and different things work for different ones.

First baby all about the black out curtains - terrible sleeper if not in complete darkness. Made travel terrible, also just in general. Woke up constantly. This hasn’t gone away; she’s 13. We call her the princess and the pea as she still needs ideal conditions.

Sleep consultant for second baby recommended napping in sunlight and a night light at night. That baby sleeps in any condition great. Same with younger sibling where I added light for sleeping. Ages 11 and 6. Awesome sleepers. Both slept through at 4 months and minimal/no regressions.

Babies respond differently so do whatever works best. Try what you need to OP.

i would use a bassinet in your bedroom for the first few months, then either mini crib in your bedroom or move the armoire to the living room. Can you rearrange so that it doesn't have to be in front of a window?

I wouldn't want to be tip toeing and not able to cook etc. while the baby is alseep

I haven't done this, but I would be nervous about it because yes darkness and quiet are pretty important. It might also be hard for you to get into a bedtime routine if the baby also using the living room for playing. Maybe you could put some kind of screens (like the folding stand up Japanese ones?) or some kind of curtains around the crib? And put on real loud white noise?

You could definitely do this, but then you'll be confined to your bedroom for the rest of the night while she sleeps. I would suggest a mini-crib/bassinet in your room.
