Question on transition to one nap

Anonymous
DD is 16 months and her sleep has been all over the place lately so I think it’s time to switch to one nap. Her naps are either short, she skips the afternoon one, or when she takes both naps she wakes up super early.

We tried it cold turkey yesterday and she woke up at 7am both days and we put her down for a nap at 12:30pm. While she was a bit cranky for the last hour she was fine as long as we kept her occupied. Problem is her naps both days were only an hour and a half which doesn’t seem like enough sleep. Last night I put her to bed at 6:30pm because she was a mess instead of her normal 7pm (she woke today at 7am), and will likely do the same today.

My question is, does it just take time for the one nap to lengthen? Any tips to make this transition easier?

Yes, it will lengthen. I can’t believe you’re making it to 12:30pm. When we transitioned at 15 months with both kids, we barely made it to 11:30am.

See if putting her down at 11:45am gets more sleep.

Also, the 6:30pm bedtime will likely be the norm for a while.

In my experience it does lengthen but there is nothing wrong with a 1.5 hour nap.

We just transitioned to 1 nap at 15 months. She's tired by 11:30 am so that's when we put her down. She doesn't do well if we try to push her to stay up longer and actually sleeps worse (shorter nap). It took about 2 weeks but now she naps for 3 hours (11:30-2:30). During transition her bedtime was 6:30 as she was only napping about 1.5 hours and was thus tired by 6:30. I am a firm believer in sleep begetting sleep and avoiding overtiredness. It may take her a few weeks for her body to consolidate that nap. Remember wake windows are only about 4.5 hours at this age.

The one nap can lengthen by the early bedtime will be a phase for a while. My 2 nap baby still goes down by 6:30 or she's a mess. But she gets up by 6:30 most days.

By these bedtimes do you mean start the routine at 6:30/7, or down in the crib by then?

I ask because my 15 month old still takes two naps (10 and a shitty one around 3), we start bath/bottle/book at 6:30 (prob down by 6:50ish) and he wakes up at 6. We don't go get him til 7 (he lays and plays in his crib quietly until then), but I'd love for him to sleep a little later so he wasn't so tired for his morning nap and we could start to transition to one later nap. Maybe we should start the bedtime routine at 7 so he's down by 7:30?

I hate these nap transitions, they are such a pain to figure out!
