Is it time to give up my BMW? If so, for what?

I love my 2010 BMW wagon to pieces, and had planned to drive it for another several years.

Last week, I found out it needs a new AC evaporator. It’s a 20-hour, $4,000 job that is causing me to do a gut check. I knew to expect it, and I can afford it, but there are other places I would rather spend my money.

When I got the car, I was in different circumstances: I had one child, and commuted to work by car, about 5 miles each way. Now I have three kids, two dogs, commute downtown by train (well, I used to...), and we just bought a second home in the mountains, which we plan to use heavily in the next year. So I was thinking about getting something larger anyway, but kept deciding against it because I really love this car. But with this development, I am starting to think it’s time.

If I were to replace this car, I would not get another German car right now. I am thinking a Toyota, Subaru, or Ford. I need AWD for the snow in the mountains. And I need a cargo area for the dogs. My car wouldn’t regularly need to accommodate five people and two dogs, because we have an Explorer as well, but it would be nice if we could do it in a pinch.

What would you advise?

I'd advice to test drive cars and get what makes you happy.

I looked at the Subaru and a few others. For the AWD and other features, it was the best bang for the buck. I upgraded to a luxury car but my in laws and everyone else out in Appalachia drives a Subaru. They really make a great, reliable car.

Dude, OP said Toyota Ford or Subaru, I don't think Tesla is in the budget. Typical DCUM thinks money grows on trees.

Love my Subaru and have done plenty of driving in snowy mountains with it! Got rid of husband's Subaru when it had 180,000 miles on it. Mine has 120,000 and still going strong. I think the newer Subarus have a zillion cupholders which is nice when you have kids!

If you like performance long-roofs, the volvo is the best option. Audi is excellent but just google "engine out timing belt" and you'll be scared away. Frankly, a 10 yo BMW you've gotten your money's worth.

Depending on budget the porsche macan is awesome, but definitely more SUVish.

I gave up my BMW for a Cadillac. I liked the way my BMW handled a lot more. My Cadillac is very reliable and the American parts are cheap. An oil change, battery or tires way way less. A very late low mileage one under full warranty is what I bought. Lots of low mileage Cadillacs are for sale

I also owned a Mercedes. Oil changes and parts were expensive.

Want to be cool. Ford is bringing back Bronco for 2021 that will be the hot vehicle

The Avtoros Shaman would carry all your family, pets, and cargo into the snowy mountains with ease.

Toyota or Tesla...anything but a BMW.

Subaru Outback. It really is the best bang for your buck and they will last you a solid 12-15 years.

182hp, miles of plastic on the inside, made by a company with known engine and trans QC issues. No thanks.
