Frederick County Public Schools is planning for hybrid reopening, with the option to choose 100% virtual learning. They are splitting students into two cohorts A & B, which will be in school MT or ThF. Wednesday is cleaning. Virtual for hybrid cohorts will not be synchronous (100% will have different details TBD.) Possibly shortened F2F school day so that teachers can support virtual lessons on those days. Masks, SD, following guidelines, etc.
Main thing not addressed is the staff issue of how to support their own children if staff is F2F. Also not addressed are staff who are in high-risk categories, some of whom could presumably support the virtual side of things. https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/fcps/Board.nsf/files/BR5RXZ703177/$file/DRAFT%20Reopening%20Plan%20Overview.pdf |

Thank you for sharing! We are in Frederick County and I’ve been wondering that the plans are.
After a quick scan of the document, it doesn’t sound like the hybrid is necessarily their top choice, but rather the one that requires the most planning and with how things are now may be the route they have to take. But not a done deal. I’ll be interested in the public comment that is indicated vaguely for “July”. So far all we’ve had is a very brief survey. |
From a parent perspective, I’d love if MCPS did this —especially if my rising 9th graders could be placed in different groups so they each have quiet days at home. From a teacher perspective, I still have questions. I don’t think it is possible to teach both DL and F2F even if the DL is asynchronous. And I’d want all the F2F participants masked and tested. |
| Yes, but then it all falls apart when parents start asking to switch their kids between programs as conditions change. |
| Hybrid sounds great but the reality is that it forces teachers to teach in two different ways at the same time. It is twice the amount of planning and preps. A lot of staff will just do the same online activities in class on chrome books as the students at home to simplify the management. I hope the county curriculum will address this weakness or there is no reason for kids to go to school accept socialization. I teach three courses that do not have county module support, so I am not looking forward to hybrid for this reason. |
You aren’t teaching the same content in two different ways. You should be planning activities for one week for all kids, 2 days of which are F2F and 3 of which are online. Either make lessons that can be taught in either order for one week, or have one group 2 days behind the other. -teacher |
| Some kids are full time DL, some are hybrid. So yes it will be two preps per course |
I think they'll have a separate set of teachers just for DL -- maybe not even the ones that normally teach at that school. They could lump together 3rd graders from a few schools into one DL class for example, and have it taught by a teacher who is immunocompromised. Think of DL almost like a separate magnet school but without any eligibility requirements. |

I read the report. Hyribid is Phase 2, while 100% in school full-time is Phase 3. It's not clear how they determine which phase they will be in. Are there some metrics they use? It was a bit unclear.
Also the classroom layout section seems contradictory. One part says they need to space desks 6 feet apart for social distancing. But then the masks section says students should wear masks if they can't social distance. So does that mean you could have a full class, even though they can't social distance, as long as they're wearing masks? |
They aren't phases in the sense that schools will necessarily cycle through them. They are 3 possible states of operation - 100% DL, hybrid for all (with DL option), 100% F2F (with DL option). They are planning for the hybrid, because that is the most complex and the most likely fall start based on current conditions. They could switch to all DL or all F2F depending on conditions and health department orders. |

over in Virginia, fairfax county public schools (the other FCPS) IS offering two options. Option 1) 4 days / week DL; Option 2) at least two full days / week of in-person

The FCPS Board of Education has a teleconference today at 3pm, to include discussion of the draft plan for reopening schools. Live streamed: https://www.fcps.org/centraloffice/fcps-television

| They voted at the meeting today to have online instruction until at least January. Good decision by the board. |
Na! Vote was a joke. This was decided weeks ago. |

I'm disappointed, I was hoping for at least two days in school of instruction.
I wasn't able to watch the BOE announcement, did they discuss improvements to their virtual education? I certainly hope it's MUCH improved over last spring's complete waste of time. |
