Is it closed until September? I just saw CUPF is cancelling all indoor permits until at least the fall. |
MCCA? If this is true and they can’t open until September then I have to think they are done for, unless MCPS waives all lease and other charges for the foreseeable future. Even then they would lose all their staff most likely. |
OP here. Not MCCA. I'm not getting this information from my provider. I was just looking at the CUPF website and it says "MCPS has given notice that their indoor facilities will not be available for community use until after September 15, 2020, because of their need to maintain control and use of their facilities so they can close out the school year and develop planning for the Fall educational programming." It also says they are refunding leases which I think has been the case this whole time - they're not charging for space that is closed. My provider has mentioned they lease the space through CUPF. Honestly MCPS, if you're making a decision that results in people losing their child care for 2-3 months, maybe give a better explanation, because this one sounds like total BS. wtf. |
That’s crazy. This county has shown it’s true colors during all this- they clearly do not care about families. Sorry I won’t be frequenting the outdoor street dining they’re so proud of if I now need to hire a nanny. |
I wouldn’t bet on them letting daycares come back in the fall either- why would they want extra people there? I agree their reasoning is BS though- and if MCPS goes all our distance learning in the fall, it will have been for nothing. |
I thought MCPS had signaled that daycares operating at their facilities could be open in alignment with MoCo reopening. |
Well as far as I can tell providers are opening daycares that are not in MCPS faculties and keeping ones in MCPS buildings closed. How/when did they "signal" this? |
It's what our daycare said, which leases a MCPS building. |
MCPS yesterday said:
"The decision on the reopening of school buildings is a decision made by state and local school and health officials. Once a decision is made, Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, will announce the reopening and will communicate directly with school districts and the public. Similarly, MCPS is working closely with state and local health officials around opening child care in school buildings. We appreciate how critical these decisions are for our community." https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/publicinfo/community/school-year-2019-2020/coronavirus-update-20200621.html According to Dr. Salmon on June 10 per the MSDE website: "School systems will now able to bring small groups of students and staff into school buildings for summer school programming. After consultation with leading public health experts, that would mean having between 10-15 individuals maximum at a time in rooms within school buildings." It sounds like the State has OKed opening school buildings but MCPS has not? But MCPS's message mentions the State as if to say it's not under their control? I am sure there is more to this story but I am getting the distinct impression MCPS is not being totally honest. |
It seems like that MCPS message is about school reopening in the fall. It doesn't seem to speak to daycares in MCPS facilities. |
Read it again. |
Found it. "Similarly, MCPS is working closely with state and local health officials around opening child care in school buildings." That sounds like it's another case of waiting on Dr. Gayles. He seems to be the reason Montgomery Parks playgrounds didn't open up last Friday too. They also said they were waiting on guidance from county health officials. |
Fair enough. What would be helpful is to know what the criteria are for opening child care facilities in schools. Is it tied to the start of school? Is there, as PP said, a possibility those child care providers won't open again? And if it's Dr. Gayles who is blocking this, then he should stand behind his decision and explain it. It looks like they are having a "virtual town hall" tonight on child care, but "space is limited" (on Zoom???) and the event is already full. |
That’s hurting the restaurants more than the County, but sure ![]() |
Agreed. I'm very disappointed in the lack of responsibility that Elrich and Dr. Gayles have taken in their own decisions. They haven't explained any other decision they've made, or given any great insight into their decision-making criteria, so I wouldn't expect them to start now. |
