Private & Independent Schools

As I read the different threads and posts I am becoming very annoyed that people in this area are so petty!!!
Yes my DC is from Maryland and yes we applied for Financial Aid and yes we are African - American and yes we did get into a Top 3 Tier 1 District of Columbia Private School (which is how many of you would describe the school). No we do not have any connections and no our DC did not attend a feeder pre-school. Is my child less worthy than yours? Should my child not have been offered this opportunity because we live in Maryland and we are African American and Applied for Financial Aid??? My child and other children of color, children of gay and lesbian couples, children from various religious and cultural backgrounds, and children of families who do not make 500,000 a year deserve every option your children deserve. I am not a drug addict nor is my husband and my DC just like many of yours is nice child. So please stop making me and I am sure some other parents feel as if we have stole something from you Our children just like yours are entitled to the best this area has to offer.
PLEASE STOP - Some of the comments being made are very offensive and not called for. |

Oh please. Get over yourself.

how did your child do on the testing? |
| Why do you care what other people think? Just ignore this thread. Not worth getting worked up about it. |
This person is still trying to figure out why they did not get in???? Why do you have to ask the OP how their child did on the testing - stop obsessing about this. If you are going to respond to this post - keep it relevant - who cares what the child got on his test - that is not the issue she is discussing. I am sure he/she did well and was a bright child that the school wanted to accept. Stop trying to analyze and figure out the perfect formula to be accepted to this school. That's the whole point - their is no perfect profile! The schools are looking for diversity - diversity in age range, gender, ability, personality, demeanor, demographics, intelligence......etc. Do you really think any school wants a bunch of stepford children? |
|
I actually don't mind the threads as I don't really care what someone else wants to do as a parent but have wondered if it might be useful to have a separate location for the private school stuff. Let me explain - I usually only come on the schools/daycare thread to see if anyone has posted something negative or positive about where my child goes to school but I'm not interested in all the other stuff unless I'm feeling nosy.
So, I don't know if they could somehow be separated out...JSteele? |
| Plus, look at the thread about people who can no longer afford private school. Maybe take it as a sign that you should save your money for private high school. or college! |
| OP: I think it's a very small number of people putting out a large number of posts. I'd bet most of the posters here would agree that you have every right to be considered just like everyone else. |
Thank you, thank you, thank you. People sometimes use the term diversity like it is dirty word and somehow the person is less qualified and took the spot the would have been designated for their child. Oh so and so only got in because of X. What worries me is this is the attitude parents may be passing down to their children. I did go to private school in NY for middle school and HS, I was on financial aid, and I am African American. I will never forget at the interview that my dad looked the admission counselor straight in the eye and asked him why I needed to go to that school. And the admission counselor told him, I didn't need to, I would do well wherever I went - had I gone to my local HS I still could have gone top ten college. That said, it was a little bit of culture shock going to the school probably economic more than anything, there were some social issues in middle school (it's a tough time in a kids life to be different in any way) but I think going there allowed me to focus on academics and gave me more confidence in myself and my abilities. I have a daughter in preschool now and she is very aware of her surroundings and trying to make sense of her world. I guess whether it comes to discussing color or when the time comes careers, I have to make sure she realizes what a boring world it would be if every person was exactly the same. |
