Exactly but the preppers will say anything to cling to this unfair advantage. They aren't interested in merit or fairness just clinging to privilege.

Wrong. All they are asking for is merit and fairness.

The admission process is all rigged. Students from crappy schools with below 3.5 gpa got accepted. oh that's right... diversity..

Not sure how these kids with 3.5 going to fare, it is always a struggle even for Bs and Cs

This is just a fiction being pushed by the pro-prep crowd who enjoys the advantages of the old system where parents could buy a TJ seat.

Troll

ironic since the PP was just pointing out there is no evidence to support this fantasy that boat loads of underqualified students will be showing up at TJ when the actual data indicates this years class will be remarkably similar to years past

It's mostly that some parents are angry that its harder for them to buy a seat for their child with the new policy.

Whatever it is, me and my kids have to prep. We don't have political patronage to protect us nor do we have wealth or privilege. You guys and your genius kids can keep creatively winging it. Eventually though preparation and hard work helps everyone in society. We'll still continue to fight unfairness and high-handedness as best as we can.

You don't know about TJ then, just research about the class that needed remedial classes and why it happened.
I don't think future TJ parents are posting here, only those who got in and didn't

This is false.

Many of the “preppers” are students from families who wasted their money on prep because they would have gotten into TJ. These kids usually do fairly well in the college admissions process.

There are a good chunk of them, however, who only got in because of the boost that the prep gave to their test scores. Some of these kids flame out of TJ because they’re just not bright enough to handle it. Others survive TJ, but only through putting in large amounts of additional tutoring that eliminates their ability to meaningfully engage in worthwhile ECs. These kids frequently end up at VCU, JMU, or a large state school like an Ohio State or UT-Austin. If they’re really lucky they might sniff a W&M or VT.

Those are the kids who without doubt would have been better served at their base school.

Bottom line though - extensive TJ prep does not have a positive impact on college outcomes and can sometimes have negative impacts by sending kids to TJ who don’t belong there.

Yes, we’ve heard this made up theory with no data behind it countless times. And we understand this is what you believe or helps your cognitive dissonance for arguing in favor of equity and affirmative action changes to admissions, but many of us have observations that are the complete opposite of that. Kids that worked very hard, studied, did well in school, and did all they could to prepare for TJ’s test did very well no matter where the went to HS and went to top colleges.

The precise point is that those kids would have done extremely well without the prep.

“preppers” are now everywhere at TJ and Base HS. Great work by TJ Principal and board!!. They anyway go to top colleges ..

“preppers” will make it to TJ clubs, labs and advanced courses ... non-“preppers” busy commuting to TJ and spent sleepless nights !! sad story !!

Exactly and why I feel addressing this before college is so crucial especially ensuring that lower-income students have access to places like TJ.
