Snow day

The thing is that the snow/ice is not going to melt. So I don't see that it will be any better on Thursday/Friday than Wednesday. So maybe they say just figure it out and we're opening Wednesday because we can't stay closed forever?

Tomorrow is 50/50. Legit could go either way but a 2 hour delay is the best case although it going to be 32 for the high and 22 tonight so that won’t melt anything, will just make it more light. I think Thursday Friday should be ok but tomorrow … iffy

They were not. And custodians don’t plow parking lots anyway.

Custodians have been called in to report on Tuesday morning.

And yes, custodians do not plow parking lots. That’s contracted out.

Curious if there are staffing / labor issues (shortages) related to snow clearing.

They’ve always contracted this out.

My question still stands. Doesn’t matter if it is FCPS contractors. Is there a shortage because my neighborhood still hasn’t been plowed including mine with a school on it. It is highly unusual and we’ve been here 20+ years.

You are misremembering. We don’t have snow like this frequently enough for there to be a consistency. It is not unusual for a plow to not go through your neighborhood yet. The snow literally stopped less than 12 hours ago.

It’s not that there is any shortage. It’s just that we don’t do big snowstorms with any real frequency. So the clean up is haphazard.

In Fairfax, VDOT is responsible for the public roads. They farm out the smaller roads to small time operators and use their big trucks for the bigger roads. Some communities have private roads and they are responsible for their own roads.

32, or even 30, in the sun is enough to melt a black road or parking lot.

😂😂 yeah sure. That’s why we have piles of snow for weeks after a big storm. It will melt patches but not a lot.

I am a teacher and I am going to assume two hour delay tomorrow. And be pleasantly surprised if we don’t go. If we don’t then Thursday will be the 2 hour delay.

I thought a delay tomorrow was likely but I just don’t know what help it would be. So I think it’s all in or all out.

And VDOT says they aim to make all roads passable (not clear) within 72 hours after the storm ends. The storm only ended last night.

Remember January 2010 when we got around 20” of snow and schools were closed for three weeks?

No they weren’t

I just went for a walk around the neighborhood. A FCPS elementary school is in my neighborhood. The plows haven't come through any of the neighborhood streets yet. All the cars that drove over the snow to get to the main streets have packed the snow down to where the neighborhood streets are covered in 1/2 to 1 inch of ice. At best the county will drop some sand down over the next 24 hours. Plowing is useless at this point. Buses won't be able to navigate the neighborhood streets tomorrow. The streets need alot of sun to make them passable. I think school on Wednesday is not possible. Maybe 2 hour delay on Thursday.

The plow never came back to our neighborhood after our one visit yesterday at 7:30 am.

No school tomorrow, folks.

First, it was February 5-6. There was no school on that Friday, Feb 5. Then another storm hit on February 9-10. We were out that entire week.

Monday, February 15 was Presidents Day. Teachers came in that day to set up. Kids came back in on the 16th. Everything was still a hot mess. Buses couldn’t drop off kids at our school because the road was not passable for a bus. We had to walk a couple of blocks out to a more traveled road and escort them on the side walk.

Our road is icy AF, and the plows haven’t done much at all due to the underlying ice. No sidewalks currently available for any of the kids, which means they’d be walking on the road to get anywhere.

See you tomorrow for Thursday predictions.
