what boys names do you hear most at the playground/daycare/school?

I'd like to avoid the most popular boys names in hopes my son won't have the same name as many other boys in his class once he is school age. Are Joshua & Jacob really that popular? Jacob is always in the top 1 or 2 for boys names & yet I never hear the name.
What about James?

I know lots of little Jakes and Joshes, but fewer Jameses. But if you're really looking for something less common, I'd avoid the top 50-100 names. (Jacob is #1, Joshua is #4, James is #17.)

For reference, my son's name is in the 300's, and it's really rare to come across. (Because it's less common, people point out that they know one another of that name, but we've never run into any other boys with the name.)

Are you looking specifically for J names? Here are some less common ones:

#110 Jesse
#113 Joel
#224 Jude
#274 Jonas

A lot of Ethans and Ryans in my son's class.

According to the SSA, Jacob, Joshua and James were #2, 4, and 7 for popularity in VA for 2008. They were #s 1,4, and 12 in MD in 2008 and #s 38, 12, and 10 in DC. So, if you live in DC, you are probably pretty safe with Jacob!

OP here,
I've looked at all the top 100 lists & ss website so I know these names are more popular. I ask b/c they are not names that I usually hear at the playground, daycare or in the school I work in. So I'm doing my own research to see which names other people hear the most. This is baby #2 & baby #1 had a name that was ranked b/t 20-30 & I rarely hear his name, despite hearing it is popular. I'm not just looking at J names, but for whatever reason, j names keep popping up in my head. I live in VA, but have no idea how long we'll stay in this area.
I'm beginning to understand why the same boys names are always in the top 10- many of the classic boys names are just good for both a baby & adult. I had a long list of girls names, oh well!

I have two kids -- 4 and 1.5. I don't know a single Josh or Jake/Jacob, and I know a smattering of Jameses (incl some who go by Jimmy).

I have a 4.5 and 2.5 year old - both boys. I live in Arlington and my older son goes to preschool. I don't know any Joshuas or Jacobs, and only one James. That said, my kids have the #1 and #8 name in VA and I don't really hear those too much either. So, maybe the NoVa area is different than the rest of the state!

My daughter (1.5) has a Jacob in her class at daycare. Other common boys names among their classmates & our friends' kids are Will, Noah, Henry, Ethan, and Matthew. I don't know any little kids named James. We live in NW DC.

My friends are all just having babies now and I already have 2 friends with Henry, 2 with Charlie, and 3 with Jack. All three Jacks are just named Jack and it is not a nickname.

There is a James in my son's infant daycare class and a friend's infant is named Jake.

I know lots of infant/toddler/preschooler Jacks (4) and Charlies (3). My preschooler has a Jacob in his class, but I don't think there are any others in the school. I don't know of any Joshuas and only 1 James.

Ditto for me on the Henrys, Charlies, Jacks, Nates and Jakes. Also popular at my kids' schools: Cole, Liam, William.
