We are considering doing a family room bump out (maybe with window seat). Approximately 7 feet wide, maybe 2-3 feet out. What is the ball park for something like this?
Anyone done a bump out and been happy with it? |
| 40k |

Really? That seems high to me for a window bump out that won’t even need foundation, roof, or new venting. Anyone else have it done for less? |
| I’m envisioning something like this. https://www.fieldstonewindows.com/project/bay-view-window-toronto-outside/ |

I don’t understand, that sounds like just a window. |
| You want a bay window? In this area, you could pay a lot for that. I would think $20-50k. Get multiple bids. They will differ depending on the windows used and contractor. |
| That’s a bay window. A bump out adds floor space. |

Looking at the picture, you want a 7 ft wide by 2-3 ft deep bump out and a bay window. So kind of like a box that sticks out the back with a bay window. The problem with adding something like this after the fact is that it is difficult to anchor the bump out to the existing house. The floor joists under the bump out have to be tied into the existing house floor. I think the small bump out will need some sort of foundation to make this possible, which is more like an addition.
We considered a 2-3ft bump out on our kitchen, but ran into the problem I mentioned above with anchoring the bump out to the existing house. We ended up adding an 8ft addition instead. The cost for the addition itself (foundation, walls, roof) was not substantial to our overall addition costs. The finishing is what costs most (flooring, cabinets, etc.) About 2/3 of our addition was a kitchen, the other 1/3 was a sitting room. The sitting room cost about $10k, while the kitchen cost over $100k. The difference was in the finishing. I'd speak to a couple of contractors about your options. |

It is a window, but not flush with the house. I’ve seen it referred to as a bump out window when I’ve been doing online searches, but maybe that’s not the technical term. |

Yes, this is exactly what we’re looking for! Interesting about the foundation issue. Thank you for sharing. If that is the case we may just enlarge the window (flush with the house, not bump out). Our primary concern is getting some more light in our family room/den area, the added seating from a bay window is a nice to have. I’ll definitely reach out to a few contractors. I had been hoping to stay under 15-20k, but it sounds like what I’m envisioning could turn into a more expensive project than I realized. |
| You’re just adding the Bay window or are you bumping out the actual floor/walls of your house? |
| If I understand correctly, OP just wants to replace some regular windows with the bay, not an addition on the home. I have seem similar windows added with brackets underneath to support them from the house walls (just like shelf brackets) and I suspect that if you get quotes they will be far less than 40K. |
| According to this article on home advisor (https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/doors-and-windows/bay-window-price-guide/) it sounds like a sub 5K project. If you get quotes, let us know what they are like. |

I’m the 40k PP. We’ve done both a bump out and a bay. Bump out was 40k. Bay window was 10k but the other PP is correct. You can’t go out more than a foot or two on a bay window without expensive structural solutions. |
| We added a bay window for $4,000 about 7 or 8 years ago in VA. |
