For those parents only who don’t allow screens

We’re dedicated to no screens (meaning TV, iPad, phone - obviously he sees screens in the world).

Was there an age or milestone (like reading) where you allowed limited screentime?

For our 8yo in a mostly screen-free house (except occasional cartoon/movie night on weekends), the milestone was the stay at home order, lol.

We waited until DS was reading. He was around 3.5. DD is 1.5 and she’s still screen-free. We’ll hold out with her until she’s three or four if she isn’t an early reader like DS.

Why would you allow screens when kids start reading? It’s fine. I just don’t understand the logic.

I don’t know why, but I chose 15 months for my first child. Aimed for 2, but it didn’t happen. Second child watched it much earlier obviously. Both are huge readers and lovers of books. I don’t know if it was the age as much as the quantity. 1-2 20 minute shows a day max for years (while at home with me). Still strict screen times now that they are tweens.

NP here. Reading is a richer form of self-entertainment that engages more of the brain. I’d like DD to be reading before she watching a TV show too.

But wouldn’t it make sense to cut out the TV when they start reading? Why introduce it then?

We limited screens to TV (and limited TV) until way into elementary school. At some point you are handicapping your child if you don't allow screens. It's what their entire generation knows and not only will they be culturally ignorant, but they will be ill equipped to enter the workforce or get a high school job or do anything at all, really, if they're not comfortable with screens, which are a part of our lives.

We kept our kid from screens until he went to kindergarten, where the school made him go on to screens for testing and reading/math apps.

Before the pandemic, we limited non-school screen time for our 9 year old to 2 hours on each weekend day. Now he gets 2 hours everyday.

Screen time has to start sometime. I love movies and hope my kids will too when they’re old enough.

Both. Age and reading. Our kids were all reading well by five.
