DC - theft crime warning during Coronavirus

A DC police officer told my neighbor to beware of a spike in thefts from parked autos. More autos are parked on the streets now, for extended periods. It’s not unusual to see unfamiliar people walking streets slowly, just to get out of the house, nor is it unusual to see people wearing masks. Both are perfect cover for thieves looking to break into cars. It’s also like the holiday season for package thieves. More people are getting groceries and other packages delivered, and Instacart and other deliverers don’t drive marked vehicles or wear uniforms. In other words, persons who are coming onto porches in search of packages to steal could easily be mistaken for legitimate delivery people and not attract the attention of neighbors. In short, there are more packages to steal and more “cover” for thieves to steal them. And everyone is trying to keep distant from one another. In these conditions, be extra observant. It’s unfortunate that crooks exploit a situation like this, but they do.

Given where things are likely heading economically, I think things are going to deteriorate, possibly significantly.

There is good reason lots of shops have boarded up as if a hurricane were coming.

There’s been a spike in thefts from autos in Cleveland Park and the Van Ness area. Be careful and file police reports on line. If you find a punk in the act, call the police and they will come.

Yeah, about two hours after the “punk” has split. Then they’ll give you a report number that you’ll give to your insurance company when you file a claim, and eat your $500-$1,000 deductible for loss.

And that will be the end of it.

Cops put zero.zero percent effort into theft from auto cases.

Best solution is to put a silent alarm on your car. When the silent alarm goes off, grab a baseball bat from your house and beat the s&@& our of the criminal in the act. He will think twice before he tries it again.

No, what will actually happen is the effete pajama-boi that is the typical DCUM “DC Man” will have his bat immediately taken away by the hooligan, and beaten senseless with it.

The baseball bat thing might work in Fairfax or Frederick, but not in Glover Park. Not enough available testosterone there.

Dc dismantled the auto theft task force a few years back. They also dont seem to care much about canvassing for video surveillance. Wish we had cctv like the Brits.

So I actually live off of Van Ness. We found some stolen stuff in our alley. I am not law enforcement but I assumed the stuff was stolen from a local vehicle smash and grab. I called MPD 2D to give a report. They said that they would send somebody by to investigate. I called everyday for the rest of the week and MPD never came by to investigate. Trash collection picked up the items on trash day. MPD had six days to send somebody by and get identification from the items to facilitate their returns, or prints to facilitate their investigation. They could have asked for camera footage from any number of the houses with cameras installed through DC security grants. They simply chose not to leave the station for this type of crime.

I understand that they are busy and that these times are crazy. But at the end of the day, they chose not to investigate yet another case of auto crime which they now squarely consider property crime and not their problem (call your insurance company).

There is a huge pick up in thefts from cars and stolen cars in the Palisades.
