"Opening up" means risking your life

Regardless of what individual states and counties do the focus this summer for the federal government has to be on
1) ramping up the production of rapid and reliable tats
2) hiring and training an army of contact tracers for every state
3) building up the capacity of the CDC to oversee the testing and tracing operation
4) PPE production on a wartime footing
This has to be done before the late Fall and Winter
Also
5) Construction of facilities that can produce the vaccine once it is ready

If they don’t do the above future economic shutdowns are inevitable

Mind blowing how poorly the pandemic has been managed. Trump is completely unfit for office and a horrible monster. Open up! Conservatives will go out and die to get haircuts and eat at Applebee’s. Have fun!

We should not have to choose between our lives and our livelihood

We should be demanding more from our elected leaders: more testing, more contact tracing, more PPE, more coordination of public health efforts, honest and transparent accounting of all deaths everywhere

thanks for the latest D talking points again just like clockwork

South Korea has a healthier population, almost no brown people (Vitamin D) issue, and most importantly a collectivist society

testing doesn't matter if you are sick stay home
contact tracing doesn't matter the virus is everywhere
PPE eh wrap a rag around your face
coordination of public health efforts ok you got one right congrats
honest and transparent accounting of all deaths sure along with statistics showing deaths from this for generally healthy folks are insignificant and most are nursing home related

next

This cannot be a serious response!
Every reputable Public health expert tells us this is what we have to do to reopen safely
Regarding your point that the task is harder in the US well that is why we need stronger leadership from our administration. Not excuses or deflections.

and every economic expert says if we don't reopen the country will collapse

and yes that's a serious response

Enough with the public health "experts"!!! We need LEADERS. People who don't turn on a whim, who take problems seriously, all problems, all the deaths, all the devastation, all the people and not just the dang Boomers. People are NOT dying from this like we're being told. 202 deaths in Maryland other than nursing homes, etc. And for sure those people are mostly sick besides. 202! That is a totally insignificant number in the scheme of society and history and life.

There will be very limited forgiveness and patience for you people who keep up with the hysterics. Who lobby rabidly to keep schools closed and businesses shuttered. When we all look back and see how over-wrought and hysterical we became, when the West is decimated as China rises, when the economy is destroyed and the Greatest Depression has set in, you hystericals will be shunned. Common sense people will not allow a dreaded "second wave" to shutter our society again, because we will have collectively shot our load once and, being catastrophically misguided and cowardly and WRONG about how bad this virus is, we won't be willing to do it again. A tide will rise very high, even in cowardly MoCo/NoVa.

That’s because the DMV shut down What do you think the death toll would’ve been if we hadn’t? Also we are learning that people who get sick and recover are often suffering long term damage to vital organs. We are also not sure whether surviving Covid confers immunity to future infection.

I honestly think that maybe we have to completely reopen and then close again. Then we might get enough PPE and tests for the next opening. Sad, but might have to happen to convince people. The only way to get rid of this thing is to go to the "box it in" phase where we do tracing and isolating. Some places are ready with the tests and tracers all set up. Most are not. The virus might well be "everywhere", but we have to stomp it out and the only way to do that is to start testing and tracing if we fully open. We might get through the summer okay with everyone outdoors, but it will come back in the fall. Now is the time to have a lot of tests and trace.

It's simply not true the virus is "everywhere" as an earlier poster claimed. Were it "everywhere" there would be many more sick and dying of covid19.

It would not have spread so far and wide in the US had our Dear Leader not denied the disaster and refused to listen to scientists who clearly predicted the extent and potential damage of the pandemic.

Most Americans are not immune to this virus. There are millions of Americans it can and will kill if its spread is not controlled.

If people on Kentucky and Florida want to "open up" not social distance, not wear masks, not wash their hands, they can only do so in total isolation from the rest of the uninfected Americans who do mot wish to contract this disease.

Of course, that's not what the open up crowd want. They want me and my family to put ourselves at risk too, and that is not a risk I am willing to take.

There is no reasoning with people like you. You set up a straw man argument that anyone who has a different opinion from you thinks we should stay like this for 18 months. Opening things back up in a locality where cases and deaths are still rising (like the DMV) is the height of stupidity. If you live in an area where that isn’t happening, good for you. But watch out because the people who lack common sense are packing into bars and Walmarts like sardines and will probably do so on beaches and boardwalks once they are open. Why are you online and not out contributing to the economy?

Clearly you don't have any friends or family who have experienced this illness. I can only hope you remain so lucky, but for anyone who has seen it up close and personal, they/we can all attest, this isn't a flu, it is brutal, and I wouldn't even wish it on people I didn't like.

But you first, go out in the world, don't wear a mask, do what you want but all I ask is that when you get the virus, do not burden the front line healthcare workers with your dumb choices.

FACT:The largest outbreak of Covid has been in NYC. Many cases in the US spread from there.
FACT: The mayor of NYC encouraged people to go out and enjoy theaters and restaurants after the virus was a problem.
FACT: The governor of NY insisted that nursing homes must take COVID patients even though it put their other patients at great risk.
FACT: NY did not shut down subways for deep cleaning until April 30.

Northern Virginia
Largest population to die from COVID has been nursing home patients.
Largest population of cases is from HIspanic communtiy.
Is there a connection between nursing homes and the Hispanic community. Who works in the nursing homes?

The governor should have concentrated with the problem spots: nursing homes. This is perhaps the cause of the spread to the Hispanic community, too.

Seen the news today about the "buggy mess" of a UK model that precipitated the maniacal lockdowns? What would have happened? Herd immunity and a totally normal amount of yearly flu deaths. Just like in Sweden. That's what would have happened.

Seen the news today that liberal lauded Colorado adjusted their death rate DOWN? The state that did the same opening strategy as much maligned Georgia did?

The death rate and causes is totally fake. We've been had. Sooner you incorporate that reality, the better off you'll be. We'll all be.

Opening up with no plan in place other than hopes and prayers is not dealing with the virus.

It exists, you know. You can't pretend it away.
