Who are you voting for in the Dem primary for mayor?

I was literally speaking yesterday to the parents of a brilliant 8th grader who just did their ranking and did not include Stuy.

Surely, your child and that 8th grader knew they couldn’t hack it at Stuy and stayed far away in Da Bronx

Ended up choosing private and on track for top tier Ivy. I went to a top tier Ivy. Pretty sure you didn’t because anyone who went to those types of schools wouldn’t be so nasty about other excellent schools. Didn’t want to be surrounded by low class losers like you.

No one is “on track for top tier Ivy” barring a deal with the development office or an athletic likely letter. Even Mamdani couldn’t get into an Ivy as black. Academic admits are a crap shoot. Thousands graduate from HYP every year, plenty speak of Bronx Science in far more disparaging terms.

FWIW my blocking group at Harvard was mostly public school kids, including one from Stuy and one from a thoroughly unremarkable public high school in Queens. The HM types were definitely around, but they all did their own thing off in final clubs or whatever and generally had a much weaker work ethic than the public school kids.

I can definitely believe that a TT prep school gives you a leg up for getting into Harvard, but it's because it helps dumber kids do better with their college admissions, not because their graduates are smarter or harder-working.

If the claim is that Mamdani isn't "intelligent enough" to be mayor, let me remind you that Sliwa is a high school drop-out, and Cuomo attended Fordham and Albany Law (both of which are mediocre at best, and in any event FAR less selective than Bowdoin). Don't be ridiculous.

No one is saying that. He's just very inexperienced.

Sure, and that's a perfectly legitimate concern. But the last several pages have been devoted to lambasting his educational credentials vs. critiquing his policy proposals or (in)experience. Just seems silly.

I just don’t think I can bring myself to vote for mamdani. I looked into it and he’s literally never had another job. This is nyc. It’s a mess. It’s just clearly not a good idea

That's because some loser was trying to show how smart they are by trying to differentiate between various super elite schools and in the process was showing what an ignorant low class moron they are. And some of us (myself admittedly included) were dumb enough to respond rather than just ignoring them.

I don’t totally disagree but holy crap, his speech yesterday was presidential. You can’t deny that there are people who are magnetic. He is one of them

No one is defending Sliwa on this thread. Cuomo didn’t say he was black on his applications. If he did, he’d have gone to Andover and Harvard without a second look at his application.

Yep. Anyone who says not getting into Columbia despite having a father on the faculty and saying you’re black is a sign of being unintelligent is a “loser.” If you dare say Trinity is a better school than Bronx Science you’re a “low class moron.”

A better comparison would be Stuy. I am the poster who said earlier that Mamdani is “top 3%” smart, not “top 1%” smart. He did well by entering Bronx science and Bowdoin but he missed on Columbia (and perhaps Stuy).

FWIW, there are plenty of “top 3%” or “top 20%” smart kids in both HM and Trinity. HM publishes a detailed breakdown of their GPA and SAT results. Top of the class stats are impressive but not everyone scores as high as the highest achievers.

This is such a dumb convo but you apparently don’t appreciate NYC geography. Mamdani lived uptown by high school. Bronx science is where those kids want to go. Stuy is way further downtown. It’s not a matter of not getting into Stuy. In NY circles, one is not considered better than the other.

Have you tried to get to Bronx Science from Morningside Heights? It takes about an hour by public transport.

Commute to Stuy is actually shorter (45 minutes).

Stuy absolutely has a stronger reputation than Bronx Science.

Maybe if you live in Ohio and you know little of NY. In NY circles, it does not.

We have to agree to disagree. Objectively, Stuy has got higher SAT scores and lower acceptance rates.

I guess you have no comments on NYC geography.

Yep. No rebuttal. Mamdani is a perfect little Angel that only bigots can criticize in the slightest, most gentle of ways. So perfect

Instead of obsessing over how Mamdani could get to high school, why don’t you tell us why your candidate is so much better?

He didn’t lie about his race, has a record of economic and infrastructure improvement, and won’t be a record holder for top GOP fundraiser. He also won’t be the South Florida Booster of the Year as anyone making 200k or more seriously considers leaving.

He’s Black or African-American?

Cuomo isn’t and never claimed to be. Elon Musk has deeper roots in Africa than Mamdani.

I am the poster who many pages back was engaged in lengthy posts about why I don’t like Mamdani. But I will not question his intellect. He is very bright. Getting into Bronx Science is not easy. Getting into Bowdoin is not easy, even as a minority. I don’t like a lot of his plans but I think he is smart. Unlike many of the posters here. Good Lord.

His parents have strong ties to Columbia. Interesting he didn’t go there. Not sure if he got in.

Bottom line—if you’re a “faculty brat”
you get easier admissions. This is well known among some cohorts.
