Dog watches intently when I'm showering

Anonymous
I've had 3 dogs as an adult. Fido 1 and 2 for almost 15 years. Fido 1 was female and followed me around the house except to the bathroom. Fido 2 was male, also followed me around, plus he always watched me as I showered--alertly. Recently I adopted Fido 3 and I've been surprised to see him watch me in the shower like Fido 2 used to. Fido 3 has a very laid-back temperament and is extremely lazy. Yet the entire time I am in the shower he sits (not lays down) and watches.

I don't know why they do this. Ruling out the creepy--they don't care when I'm naked or changing clothes. There is something specific to the shower, maybe the auditory stimulation?

Curious about others' experiences and takes.

Gross. You're creepy for allowing your dogs into the bathroom with you without closing the door before you shower. Save it for your boyfriend.

Close the door.

My dog is too short to see over the bathtub edge, but sometimes she does wait on the bathmat until I come out of the shower, and leaves the room. I think she's just checking that I'm really in there, and once she knows, she leaves.

More than a few dogs are afraid of water. Your dog may be anxious for your safety while you're in the shower. His behavior sounds like he's being solicitous/protective of you.

I think he’s being protective of you as well. My dog demonstrates he is very concerned for my safety as well.

It's a dog not a dude.

My dog hangs out while I shower too because she's worried about me and confused about what I'm doing.

I agree with others that he’s probably protective of you. My dog will try to get in the shower with me or my kids but he doesn’t like taking a bath or shower by himself.

I think your dog sounds really sweet.

My dog doesn't care about showering -- except to the extent that it lets him stretch his large self out on my warm bed!

OP, I've fostered 25 dogs. They are all different. Some are curious. This dog probably really likes you, worries about you and wants to be close to you. There is nothing gross or untoward about him/her wanting to be close to you during the shower or wondering why you are letting the noisy water fall all over you. Do what you are OK with as far as locking him out or letting him watch. People are the perverts, not dogs.
