Colleges growing in popularity

What schools do you see students getting excited about that largely may not have have been on the radar five or so years ago? Be sure to include what may have made the difference in terms of the popularity shift. Please be respectful, this could be a useful tool since there are no college tours right now.

The DMV has “discovered” southern football schools - think Clemson, Auburn, Alabama.

One that has HUGELY grown in popularity for our NOVA public (like many other schools, it seems) is University of Pittsburgh.

All our good schools. Part of their popularity might be they are far enough away from DMV to suit many students, but not so far that traveling to them is a hindrance.

SLACs generally because they can use a holistic approach in admissions rather than making strict GPA cut-offs using often super-grade inflated GPAs.

SLACs specifically not on the East Coast - Occidental mentioned earlier, the midwestern SLACs, and even southern SLACs like Rhodes and Sewanee.

I am seeing a big rise in popularity in the southern state schools — Clemson, USC, UF, FSU, Bama, Auburn, etc. If I recall correctly, U of South Carolina was one of the most represented schools among my daughter’s graduating class last year at a W.

Also: Pitt.

The name is not "Miami of Ohio." It's Miami University.

Miami was a university in Ohio when Florida belonged to Spain. If you need to make a distinction, call the University of Miami "Miami of Florida."

Elon was a joke a decade ago. Now, I agree, it is becoming a first-choice school. I’ve been surprised at the quality of the kids (nice, bright, hard working kids) going there from our school/neighborhood.
