Son has flu... neighbor and friend vent

Anonymous
Over the last two weeks, several neighborhood kids and friends of ours haven been sick. Most have missed a few days of school. BUT... They still bring the children to scout meetings and soccer practice and other events. I kept my son home yesterday because he had a sore throat & cough and took him to the doctor. He tested positive for flu B (and yes he was vaccinated). Our scout pack has an event scheduled for tonight. I volunteered to help up set up as well as bring things, so I let the leaders and other volunteers know we couldn’t make it. The two moms that had sick kids they still took to everything are of course asking if I need any help, etc. Our older son has a birthday party Saturday, and the germaphobe mom wants to ensure her children don’t get near my sick child. I reassured her that he isn’t going to the party.
Just venting... wish people would keep sick kids home from everything, not just school. It’s a bummer my younger son has to miss his brother’s party, but it’s the right thing to do. He probably wouldn’t be sick if the sick kids weren’t at scout meetings and soccer practice. Parents don’t send them to school because our schools are vigilant about sending home sick kids... but no one gets sent home from practice or scouts since they are only 1-2 hours. The coaches and leaders assume you would keep your sick kids home.

Get it but if you know anything about the flu or viruses in general you know that people are contagious BEFORE they show symptoms. So sick kids at home are great but that won't keep your kid from getting sick.

A full bubble will.

Your post is hard to follow. Are you venting your kid may have caught the flu from scouts?

or soccer. A couple kids I know stayed home were there - coughing, sneezing, wiping snot with their sleeves and hands...
I get that it is contagious before symptoms appear. But it is much more contagious when kids are coughing and sneezing all over other kids. Since they kept their child home from school, they should also keep them home from extracurricular activities.

Odds are that other family members may be sick or about to be sick by tomorrow.

Germaphobe mom has a point.

My husband started feeling sick, but the test was negative. The doctor gave him Tamiflu knowing that he’s been exposed and the test may be negative in the early stages. But myself and my other son have no symptoms, and we were vaccinated. The vaccine is only about 30% effective this year, but so far appears to have worked for me and my other son. We are seeing our regular family doctor this afternoon for his yearly physical, and I will have both of us tested. She also may give us Tamiflu as a preventative. Never hurts to ask.

Yes, people have different ideas of what is acceptable to do when sick.

This should not come as a surprise.

It's particularly challenging for children and adults with poor immunity, or with pre-existing conditions that make catching something more risky than for the average person.

My kids and I have been on off sick all winter. We have coughs, runny noses and sneezing. No fever. No flu. Our kids go to school everyday.

Then good on you. My point is if a child is too sick for school, they are too sick for extracurricular activities.

If they are 24 hours past fever, and feeling up to an activity, I can see myself sending them to scouts for an hour even if I had kept them home from school an extra day post sickness to sleep in and rest.

Pp here. I would keep my not feeling well kid home from scouts but I may send still send him to school. I would definitely keep sick kid home from sports.

Did you get your family flu shots?

OP said her child was vaccinated. FYI the vaccine wasn't a good match for flu B this year.

The flu is contagious while they have symptoms- coughing and sneezing. It is this coughing and sneezing that makes it very contagious to others that are around them. OP stated that the kids were coughing and sneezing and getting snot everywhere.
