This is the first year of MCPS's new selection process for high school magnets
Is it fair ? What is admission/application ratio ? Is CogAT heavily weighted ? etc ? |
| ? really? what's the new process? "peer cohort"? |
| I think the central office did a really good job. For application based magnets, there is no cohort criteria like middle school. |
so, then what is this new "selection process" OP is referring to? I had not heard anything about it. |
wasn't it done by the central office staff? in the past, magnet school folks (teachers and coordinators) made the selections |
Yes |
| This and the fact they took most of the application away. |
| This is how the school system F-off even the things that are working well. Magnet programs are just about the last things still working. Now, they f- that too. Amazing morons. |
That was a good thing. The previous high school magnet application was more complicated than a college application. It was ridiculous. |
|
OP here,
I thought this was a new process but I did not know previous years because this was the first time and would be the only time we applied for high school magnet programs. We did 3 years ago for middle school magnet programs, it was a lot more complicated -- for example we had to hand the papers to the teachers for recommendations |
| Magnet school staff were still invoked this year, or at least they were at Poolesville and Blair. |
|
It opened the door to much more students who wouldn't have applied to the magnet if the application was not so simple as this year (and last year?).
The magnet program used to be an exclusive club for well-informed students/families with resources. But it will change. |
And that's fine, just don't go down the peer cohort nonsense. |
Just wonder why no cohort criteria for high school magnet ? because high schools have AP courses while middle schools courses choice limited ? |
No...not at Blair at least. |
