Our 4 year old gets car-sick and we do windows, limited screens and dairy and lots of distractions. The last time we flew she got airsick and now, despite being very excited about our trip tomorrow, she's incredibly worried about getting sick again. The flight is short and in the morning. We downloaded frozen 2 so we have that - but I am wondering if there is anything else people do or medicine that may help alleviate her symptoms?
When I was little I remember I got ginger-ale on planes - such a treat and I am tempted to give her that. But what about benadryll or anything else OTC. |
I would give her dramamine. Also, I've noticed that my son throws up more on an empty stomach. |
Of course - kid's dramamine. It works. Try next day shipping on amazon or your nearest pharmacy. |
Why are you giving her dairy? That's nuts. |
We do Dramamine plus Sea Bands (fondly known as barf bracelets around here) for our kids who get air sick. |
I get motion sickness as a child and I still do now. I would suggest that you get a window seat for her, and for her to look outside during take off. I find that to be helpful. Of course, I always take Dramamine just in case. But looking out in general, always help. |
Why Dairy? Bring some easy peel oranges. I was a car sick kid and for some reason citrus and minty scents, as well as something salty helped me cope. Dairy used to trigger sickness for me. |
She limits dairy and screens. |
Seat her in the window seat if possible. |
Just follow the directions on the Dramamine box. That shit creates an iron stomach.

Mint trident gum or peppermints and Dramamine. |
Wait, do you limit screens or do screens? Limiting screens makes sense, but then you say you downloaded Frozen 2? She should not be watching screens if she gets airsick.
If you want to give her meds, give her children's dramamine (it will likely make her drowsy). If it's a short flight and you want to avoid, I'd suggest seabands (they work reasonably well for our motion sick kid), peppermint (candy canes are good for that age), real ginger candy (the lollipops made for pregnancy actually work well for that age, but some kids can't take the taste) and/or saltines. A totally empty stomach actually isn't a good idea. Ginger ale can be good as can lemon squeezed into water. |
I sympathize as a life long motion sickness person.
Ginger candies with real ginger might work better than ginger ale. Gingins are good. Ginger ale is also fine but any sugary soda will work - regular coke is great for me. Plain crackers as well. Also recommend buying blue vomit bags from amazon, the kind with the vented plastic ring on the top. The plastic ring keeps it open and allows air to exit, so the vomit goes down into the bag. If you have to puke, it seriously enhances the experience. No reading. Screens are okay. Deep breathing can help. A cup of ice can also help - rub it on temples and neck. I might even bring a washcloth to dip in the icy water if you’re really looking for ways to comfort. |
+1 for Dramamine. It's magic.
Also, give NO dairy. They have something called "queasy pops" too. But honestly, dramamine works so well you won't even need anything else. Give it 1 hr in advance. |
Do the Dramamine. I also think you should get the seabands because with some kids the visual makes them feel in control and will help.
If you do try to let her wat a movie get the screen up to eye level. Do NOT let he keep it in her lap and watch. |
