| It is pretty late in the game. I know there are some struggles between where it will be. I get that a lot of parents on the hill want them in trailers near TRY, but I’d be worried trailers couldn’t accommodate everything that is needed for a school in that age range. At the same time, Wash Met is in an entirely different part of form. I think the location decision is going to have a huge impact on where people place it on the lottery. So when the hell are they going g to make the decision? It’s not like any of the factors are going to change so just call it! |
| At the open house they said they would know by the lottery deadline. Check out their twitter feed; they’re also being left in the dark. |
| Location is a nice to know but not essential (and they will decide ore lottery deadline). They will shuttle kids and the shuttles are well done. Yes there is time but little kids generally like taking the bus. |
| They are waiting for the Wash Met blowback to die down before they give the building to high income kids. |
Washington Met would need some renovation to be appropriate for an elementary school. It may well not be feasible for next fall, or could be beyond the budget. Remember that any swing space will come from the SWS renovation budget and there may not be enough to absorb it. You do not want them to dip into money designated for your renovation to be used for expensive swing space. TL;DR - be careful what you wish for |
| Current SWS families would love to know this information too. |
I don't think your information is accurate. The SWS renovation budget will go towards the renovation. The budget does not include swing space renovations as I understand it (the swing space will be used for other schools after SWS's renovation is done - at least that is what the school was told last Spring). |
That's what they say. But when they created the budget Washington Met wasn't even a possibility. And that's what has happened before when a school moved into a new swing space location. |
There is money set aside for a swing space - either renovating a current building or using trailers. But, you're right, "that's what they say." At this point, they have not been trustworthy at all in this process. |
| My fear is that they will just push off the renovation another year. .. |
| It’s annoying from the outside but this has got to be awful for the SWS community. I live across the street from WashMet and from my perspective it’s closing. It’s a done deal unfortunately and it’s a tough pill to swallow. Question is whether that land and building now sits empty or acts as a swing space next year. |
SWS does not make this decision. DCPS does. |
Tell that to CHML. The school got decimated by the swing space. Some primary classes lost half of their kids. They went through almost their entire waitlist for PK3 if not the whole thing (through 122 at least). Their enrollment is projected way down next year. Little kids do not like taking the bus for an hour in rush hour; that's what happened w/ CHML. |
I’m a current SWS family that lives on the Hill and when I plug Wash Met into WAZE during rush hour it says it takes 22 minutes from my home. (At night it says it takes 15 minutes.) I plan to stick with the school even if we’re at Wash Met. |
You're doing evening rush hour, I assume... which isn't as bad. Morning rush hour is worse and buses are slwoer. Wash Met is nowhere near as bad as the CHML swing space, but 30 minutes is going to be the norm in the morning; bad traffic will be more like 45. |
