PK3 should be fully funded in boundary

Anonymous
The lack of funding for in boundary PK3 is incredibly short sighted. Anxious parents who would be delighted with an in boundary PK3 school instead look elsewhere and many never come back once they enter the charter schools. It is the first rule of selling... don't send your customer to see your competition's pitch when you have them in front of you. Close them right away. The knock on effects echo from this

Oh come on. They would love to do this but it's harder than you think.

1) You don't understand the funding is mainly Head Start. 2) Unless quality is fixed people will leave anyway. 3) The real constraint is ground floor classrooms that are physically Head Start compliant.

It is at Early Action schools. But you wouldn't dare move to one of those neighborhoods, right?

How much are you willing to shrink the boundary of your neighborhood school to create extra classroom space for PK3 and/or PK4? Part of the reason this initiative was easily implementable was that there were LOTS of underutilized DCPS buildings across the city.

This is a very important concern for parents whose kids are frozen in time and will remain in pre-K forever.

For those of you that have children who age, you'll be glad when their class size isn't increased to make room for additional PK3 and PK4 classrooms.

How large do you want other classes to be in order to accommodate this? Would you trade off this for a K class of 30 students?

Just wait, as soon as Bernie is President it will all be free. I’m sure he will use Congressional powers to turn DC into a fully funded utopia.

My kids will age, but not in DCPS. I plan to take advantage of the free PK and then switch, so I am fine with other sacrifices for improved PK options that won’t require traversing the city to find an option.

Why should rich kids WOTP get fully funded day care starting at 3?

You can't have universal IB PK without substantial redistricting.

There it is.

Three thoughts:

1. I’m not opposed to universally expanding public services because some rich kid may also benefit from the expansion of public services.

2. The rich kid has a nanny and then is off to Beauvoir.

3. Under the current system, rich kids, regardless of living WOTP or EOTP, can get fully funded daycare starting at 3.

Because we want universal programs, and because those rich kids are paying taxes too.

Conservatives want to means-test government services (stop rich kids from using them) because they know that programs for the less-well-off are easily cut.

Universal, free, PK is good for everyone in DC. Rich, poor, white, black — everyone should get free PK. It’s unifying for the city.
The people pushing to cut PK for rich kids are conservatives that want to cut PK for everyone so they personally can pay lower taxes.

That’s fine. You’ll be in DCPS for a few years. And then you won’t take advantage of the free public school after that. It’s ok.
And for every person like you there will be others who stay.
You’re doing good for DCPS and for DC even if you come only for PK. Enjoy DC and your DCPS experience.

But currently the only people who don’t get PK funded are rich people WOTP. Hard to cry for them. Also nobody’s trying to cut what we already have. Actually there are plenty of slots citywide.
