Does anyone want to help me find dresses for this situation?
My BIL is getting married, DH is best man, and my three sons will be in the wedding. I am not officially in the wedding. I was invited but declined, just because it's too much with my kids one of whom has major medical needs. I will probably end up being in a bunch of photos, and pretty visible helping my kid who is in the wedding. The wedding will be a Catholic mass in the morning in April, with a small brunch reception at my in laws afterwards. Not too formal, the bride is wearing a knee length dress and silver shoes, the men will have navy suits and silver ties, maid of honor will be in a navy dress with silver accents, and my kids will all be in some combination of navy, silver, and gray. I need a dress that will be forgiving if I'm crouching down, bending over my kid's wheelchair, lifting my kid etc . . . My guess is that something longer and not too tight is a good idea. I also need it go with flat shoes of some sort. I'm hoping to use the same outfits for family pictures, so I don't want it to clash too much with everyone else in navy/gray/silver, but I don't need it to be too matchy. I also want either sleeves, or something I can put a cardigan over for church. Here are a few dresses I've seen that I like. I wear a size 10. Too fancy (e.g. more fancy than the maid of honor?) https://www.berrylook.com/en/Products/round-neck-floral-printed-maxi-dress-214059.html?color=green&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuLy6wai75wIVirbICh1pFwbKEAQYGCABEgLFf_D_BwE Too short if I'm bending over a lot? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q69YQKW?aaxitk=0n9wMqUDFfjNjCdkSPeOiw&pd_rd_i=B07Q34FW76&pf_rd_p=591760d1-6468-480f-9b10-0ee9c85706fd&hsa_cr_id=5626044940601&sb-ci-n=asinImage&sb-ci-v=https%3A%2F%2Fimages-na.ssl-images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F319h8EDda3L.jpg&sb-ci-a=B07Q34FW76&th=1 Maybe doesn't go with all the navy?" https://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/olive-wrap-dress-maroon-clematis/sty-w0500-brn?cat=C1_S2_G4&pid=W0500-W0500-G_00000002605 Too bright? https://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/faye-jersey-midi-dress-navy-wiggle/sty-j0604-nvy?cat=C1_S2_G4 Too casual? https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Patterned-Short-Sleeve-Waisted/dp/B07JMVVKBV?ref_=BSellerC&pf_rd_p=01411090-eb71-5b38-88db-2b9e88bf437c&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-11&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=2346727011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=KVESVKNVJY0FNERTAM3M&th=1 https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Essentials-Patterned-Short-Sleeve-Waisted/dp/B07JP745HD?ref_=BSellerC&pf_rd_p=01411090-eb71-5b38-88db-2b9e88bf437c&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-11&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=2346727011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=KVESVKNVJY0FNERTAM3M&th=1 Help! |

I quite like some of these but they all seem very casual to me. I think I like the Boden wrap dress best, and I think it would go with the navy
|
| I'd probably check with the bride about how much is too much regarding matchy/formal. She may be okay with you matching/being almost exact since you were invited to be in it originally. Just pick some out and run them past her. Or the MOH, if she's too busy. |

Would you wear a jumpsuit? They can look really elegant on some people (not me, unfortunately) and would give you a lot of freedom of movement.
https://www.talbots.com/satin-crepe-halter-jumpsuit/P194036872.html?cgid=apparel-rsvp-occasion&dwvar_P194036872_color=BLACK&dwvar_P194036872_sizeType=MS#7db014db0554dce7dd66848a20=&start=1&sz=126 Or how do you feel about wearing navy dress pants (or a navy suit) with a dressy top? That's what my cousin's wife wore when she was kid-wrangling to her sister-in-law's (black tie optional) wedding. |
OP here, she's the most laid back bride ever. She keeps saying she wants me there, she doesn't care what I wear, anything is fine. I could probably show up in a floor length ballgown style wedding dress and she'd be like "Oh good, you're here!" Not that that's on the list that I'm considering. |
I have done pants and a dressy top at every occasion that required dressing up since my medically fragile kid joined us, including another wedding, my kid's first communion, my kid's adoption. This will be the first time he's ever seen me in a dress. I'd kind of like to branch out, although if someone showed me a really nice dressy top, I could be persuaded to change it. I haven't seen a jumpsuit that I like with sleeves, and I have a hang up about wanting sleeves. |

I think the first link is super-pretty! But I also love the idea of a jumpsuit - can look super-sharp and also be forgiving.
But remember that the bride is goign to be thrilled that you're there, so pick something you like and don't stress! |

The person who posted Talbots reminded me to look there.
I really like this dress in navy https://www.talbots.com/easy-travel-fit-and-flare-dress/P194079200.html?cgid=apparel-dresses&dwvar_P194079200_color=BLACK&dwvar_P194079200_sizeType=MS#c5a9c7a13b85b92dfe259b6ecf=&start=1&sz=36 I worry that it's too short for bending over a kid sized wheelchair, and that it looks too much like the MOH whose dress is also solid nay and knee length. But I really like it. I might order it and try moving around in it. I can always return it. |
I agree, I think that would be very pretty for an April wedding! |
This seems so plain for a wedding, even a fairly casual one. |
OP here, do you think my worry about being dressier than the MOH is a thing? I guess part of my problem is that it seems as though in the length that I think will work best, the choices are either very dressy or very casual. |

OP here again,
What do people think about this dress? https://drapers.blair.com/p/173013.uts?productVariantId=6217118&src_code=DEAPAID&cid=pl_dd_google_pla_gen&scid=scplp9634890&sc_intid=9634890&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9NDglsq75wIVjorICh08PAYDEAQYAyABEgKRqfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds |
This is pretty but if you are concerned about being overdressed, this is the dressiest of all the options so far. The first dress in navy with the tulips is nice and doesn't seem very dressy at all. I think its your best bet. |

I also have a child who is in a wheelchair and requires lifting. So, I truly understand the logistics concerns. This dress is an absolute staple in my wardrobe
https://www.virginiadaredressco.com/collections/shop-dresses/products/emma-dress? It is so comfortable and flattering. Paired with the right shoes and some statement jewelry it might the perfect blend of dressy casual. |
Thank you! That looks great! |
