I'm always about 10 steps behind technology. My cellphone is at least 5 years old, and I think its time to upgrade. I'm not even sure what all an iphone does, but I am tempted to go that way - simply because some of the apps are so appealing (help me to find where I parked my car, GPS in the phone). And also, because I have friends with iphones, so there's hope that I can figure out how to use it (since there are so many people who can show me how).
But is there some reason to not get one? Anyone hate theirs? Are there hidden costs beyond the phone price and monthly fee? Or does the service suck? I'm a verizon customer now, so I'm a little leery of switching to AT&T (but mabye I'm just brainwashed from the ads). |

I love my iphone for the easy and readable web surfing (great when you are waiting somewhere), GP and maps locator, preschool and toddler apps, weather and general ease of use.
I think verizon still is the only carrier with coverage on the metro underground so that may be a consideration. |

DH has one - he just upgraded to a newer model (he is always first in line with gadgets, and his work involves downloading video footage and that is much easier to do on iPhone vs. blackberry) - his only complaint is that sometimes calls are dropped. He has not been thrilled with AT&T.
I'm in the same boat as you are - always way behind and he wants me to take his old iPhone and get us on a family plan. But I've been reluctant. On the one hand, I think it would be really cool. On the other hand, I have to have my blackberry for work so that would now mean I would have both....and that seems like a hassle! I guess I have a cell phone and blackberry now but my cell phone is so cheap I don't really care if I lose it - whereas I would freak out losing an iphone or my blackberry! |
| I got a 32 iphone for christmas and I love it! I wish I'd never bothered with anything else...iphone is my favorite gadget ever! |
| Yes, one very good reason - AT&T service sucks! I read on a blog a few weeks ago that Apple will be using the other mobile providers starting later on this year - there is hope yet. |
iPhone user here, and PP is 100% correct. Dropped calls on a regular basis. Very limited coverage in a lot of the country. I would hold out until the iPhone is available on Verizon. The minute it is, I will seriously consider coughing up whatever "early termination" penalty I have to pay to kill off my "relationship" with AT&T. Oh, and did I mention their billing is completely screwed up and they can't seem to figure out how to fix it? We were charged for 4 accounts. For our TWO phones. Huh? |
| OP here. Thanks! I will hold onto my dinosaur of a phone for a little longer to see if the Iphone is offered with other carriers. While I don't use my cell phone a lot, it would really irk me to spend a lot of money and then have dropped calls. |
You might want to check with AT&T customers near where you live and work to see what type of service they've had. In DC, I really haven't had a problem with AT&T. There have been rumors of the iPhone coming to Verizon ever since the phone came out. They still haven't materialized. I would expect that it's a year off at best. Verizon has thrown in its lot with the Droid. I doubt they would have done that if the iPhone was right around the corner. |
Thanks. I will ask my friends to see how they like their service, as I will use it mostly in this area, and I avoid the metro when at all possible. Thanks for the warning about the "rumor that will never materialize." I may still wait, but I won't hold my breath. |

Don't hold your breath for other carriers to work with the iphone. I love mine but there are two really big downsides:
1) AT&T. I litterally have dead zones in my own home. I can only use my phone in a couple areas of the house. Rediculous. 2) Texting absolutely sucks on the iphone. You have to use the touch screen and it's really tricky. It gets easier but it's way slower than any other tactile keyboard phone. I have dainty fingers and still find it horribly cumbersome. |
| i love my iphone. i HATE AT & T. more than anything. i have never had so many dropped calls in my entire life. that said, i stick with them because i love my iphone so damn much. |

I'm also ten steps behind technology, and have a 3yo cellphone (only cellphone). I live in Silver Spring and have basic AT&T service, which has been fine. I don't have access to the Internet on my phone, or texting, or anything - just limited phone service.
If I got an iPhone, what would my monthly charges be for access to the Internet, voice, etc.? If I sound clueless and behind the times, it is because I am. |
| I heard Verizon will have the iphone this summer...may want to wait if that is the case |

I have some circulation issues that make my fingers cold. I really struggle to use that keyboard. I bought a blackberry in the end, and I love it (no work allowed on my blackberry).
Also, if you are ten steps behind, you may just plain hate that touch screen. I'd experiment for a few hours in the store before spending the money. |

I really like it, but it's all about the apps-- they really are great-- and then texts, and actual phone service is about the last thing you should buy it for (it's not uncommon for calls to go right to voicemail).
I would not at all hold your breath waiting for a verizon iphone-- but in time the apps on the droid might make it a useful competitor, although I find the iphone virtual keypad easier to use than the droid's hard keypad (although the droid does have a virtual keypad). |
