| i don't want expensive toys for fear of breaking or losing them. with my free phone i can always get another replacement for free. |
| It is highly doubtful Verizon will get the iPhone. Get a droid. |
|
Iphone owner since the Original phone. While I DO love the phone, I also agree with At&t's service. It is horrible the amount of dropped calls you get.
That being said, I have heard a lot of good things about The Droid. |
| I just upgraded to a Smartphone and really wanted the iPhone but I'm a Verizon customer and refused to switch to AT&T due to all reasons stated by PPs. I got a BBerry (which I like) and am waiting for the iPhone to come to Verizon eventually. That said, my husband just got a Droid and he's in love with that damn phone. Every time I turn around he's doing something with it. He had a BBerry prior and barely used it (other than phone calls). So if you're interested in sticking with Verizon I'd definitely check out the Droid. They are really heavy, though. |
You can use Sprint on roaming and for texting. Soon(if not already) 20 stations will have access to other phone services and eventually they will be set up throughout the metro system. But that said, AT&T is a deal breaker for me. I have to be able to communicate with my metro-riding family throughout the system. |
| Google is supposed to be coming out with a phone which will work on any system. I think it will shake things up a bit. |
| Can you just use your husbands old iPhone as an iPod touch? |
I highly doubt that it will work on "any" system. It would have to have two radios in it because we have both GSM and CDMA systems in the US. Since its supposed to work with T-Mobile, that suggests that it will work with GSM systems. Therefore, you could use it on both T-Mobile and AT&T, but not Verizon or Sprint. One interesting thing about the Google phone is that almost every report about it makes a point of the fact that you can buy an unlocked version (leading to the misconception that you state above). However, you can also buy unlocked iPhones -- just like unlocked Google phones, they cost more. Engadget has a report about the Google phone here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/02/exclusive-google-nexus-one-hands-on-video-and-first-impressio/ In their opinion, its not an iPhone killer. |
See what Google says tomorrow. "Is Google unveiling an 'iPhone killer?'" Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET, Google will make some kind of announcement related to its Android smartphone operating system. It's expected to be the launch of Google's Nexus One phone -- the company's first full-on leap into the smartphone fray and one that will put the online giant head-to-head with the darling of the market, the iPhone.... http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/01/04/google.nexus.phone/index.html |

just got matching ones for xmas. husband LOVES his. i am not a technophobe and seriously it is 'too much' for me. I did like being able to search the web and find 'starbucks' anywhere near us driving down the highway on vacation...there is also a bar code reader which you can use to scan anything with a barcode and find what it retails for and compare--great when shopping and will look up wine labels--pretty cool.
also---instead of the portable dvd I used my iphone to entertain my kids on the plane...much more compact- had videos and games loaded up for them.... wait..maybe it isn't so bad. I don't use the phone very often--work from home--no serious issues for me or dh about coverage in the dc area in the last few weeks. |
| Iphone works in some Metro stations, but not all. I read that they are opening up Metro mobile phone service to other providers. There was a Post article about it a while ago. I think relatively soon (maybe within the year), AT&T will have coverage throughout Metro. |

As you can tell, there are iphone camps and "not iphone" camps (usually droid people). There are millions of blogs on each, which may or may not help your research. That said, everyone I know with an iphone sings its praises. We have mac everything (and then some), so our house is biased in favor. |

OP here. I half to laugh at the number of responses. I will wait - especially now that I have more to think about. My main problem is I don't know what I would actually use on the iphone - in order to see if the Droid would be something I would like (or if a new iphone or i-tablet or whatever) would be worth the wait.
Scan a barcode and compare prices! How cool is that?! And to just avoid confusion, I'm not the poster with the husband with an old iphone. I still have to walk my husband through how to program the DVR

You can always get an Ipod touch with is basically an iphone without the phone. You can get all the apps on there too!

They just added other carriers. I saw a press release about if a month or two ago. Prior to that, it was just Verizon. |
