| Personally, I won't get one because I think the charges (both for data but especially for phone) are outrageous for the average user. Right now I have a $30/month phone plan that I never use - I could switch to a pre-paid plan and it would probably cost me $10/month. So being forced to do to take a $40/month plan is crazy. Same with the data plan - I don't use enough data to make it worth while. |
| I've had the iPhone since may. I love everything about it EXCEPT the keyboard. I was so used to and very comfortable typing with the blackberry, I still am not proficient in typing on this. I'd recommend using your friends' keyboard to type some stuff first so you know how it is. Everything else about the iPhone is terrific. It doubles as an iPod and you basically have a fully functioning personal computer in your pocket. The apps are so helpful. AT&T also has a 30 day return policy if you realize it's not for you. |

I've been with AT&T for years. Their service isn't perfect, but I haven't actually had that much of a problem with it. The plans offer more minutes than Verizon for the same price. And you can get service in a number of metro stations now. I got the iphone a few months ago. It's kind of a pain, if you ask me. I love the apps - the mapping software is extremely convenient, and being able to check my email and facebook on the fly means I rarely have to start up my laptop in the evenings or weekends. The cost is about $90/month for a decent number of minutes, unlimited texting and the $30/month data plan.
Cons: the touch-screen is not especially easy to type on, even if you turn it sideways so the buttons are larger. Constant typos and sometimes the autotext correction is hilarious. I preferred the QWERTY keyboard on my old blackberry. I wasn't able to transfer my phone numbers from my old phone's simcard, so I never have migrated all my numbers. (though it's easy to pull in contacts from Outlook if you have Outlook on a computer.) I also haven't figured out how to save numbers in my contacts from either a phone call or a text, which is annoying. The camera also has a pretty hair-trigger button, so if you even get close to the button, it'll go off, taking a picture you didn't intend to take. it's also very easy to accidentally hang up on someone when you're on hold - sometimes if you're holding the phone to your ear for long periods of time, you'll shift between screens and lose the call. and last, it's a bad cold-weather phone. The touch-screen needs heat/pressure from your fingers - your bare fingers - to work. Which means taking your gloves off outside to dial. Brrrrr. So you might want to look at other options. The apps are great, which is the only reason I didn't get rid of it after a week. If you already have AT&T, consider it, or a blackberry type thing. But I've heard the (Verizon) Droid is a worthy opponent. |
| The keyboard. The high At&T monthly plans. At&T doesn't offer insurance on the iphone. |
Android has a barcode app as well. |

Check out the Droid, my husband just got one and is very happy with it. It has a keyboard with real buttons, and that is a big plus. If you look for Droid vs. Iphone comparisons on youtube, cnet, etc., a lot of reviewers like the Droid as well or better.
I got one too and returned it--I just didn't see myself using all the features and just wanted a phone that I could make calls on. Maybe when I've had time to get used to my husband's Droid I'll want one for myself, but right now it's just not worth the extra money for me. |
Both of these are very easy to do: Save number from phone call: Go to your list of recent calls. Click the ">" (greater than) symbol to the right of the number you want to save. A new page will expand. Click either the "Create a New Contact" or "Add to Existing Contact" button. Save number from text message: Click on the conversation of the number that you want to save. Scroll to the top and click "Add to Contacts" (the wording might be different -- I'm going by memory because all my current texts are already linked to contacts). |
| OP, you and I are two peas in a pod (and not a cyber one). I'm another late-adopter with a plain vanilla cellphone and a Verizon plan. Although I've been tempted to get an iphone, I've resisted -- largely b/c AT&T has such a poor reputation. So, here's my question: should I get an itouch? Would that let me have my Verizon service cake and eat the apps too? Techno-moms, please give me the benefit of your wisdom! |

What about this?
http://www.google.com/phone I'm interested in the Apple Tablet also. |
| I will get the brand new google phone. I love that I can send email just by dictating. That's the feature I've been waiting for. |
OP here. Other pea, you are ahead of me. I don't even know what an itouch is
|
First pea here -- I only know what it is because I made DH return the one he gave me for my birthday, after making him return the iphone he gave me for Mother's Day. For Christmas I got jewelery and books , and I loved not having email access for the week we were out of town between Christmas and New Year's! Maybe I really don't want a smart phone -- you think?
