Or are you all wealthy, privileged Bethesda and Arlington moms? I actually grew up working class and pretty much every poor and working class family I know struggles yes, but they are also much much better at having a support network of other families, friends, church members, etc. I’m thinking of all my friends growing up and a school closure would have been dealt with just fine. Even in the face of a national health crisis their families would have been too busy and tired working to be pushing for it. But if schools had had to close, they absolutely would have pulled together and dealt with it.

Couldn't agree with this more, as someone who also grew up in a working class community.

I will also add that many people who have lower incomes and do what they need to do to make ends meet find the posts referenced by the PP both empty and insulting.

If this virus hits badly in the community all at once, guess who is going to be the hardest hit? The lowest income families. The school closures will suck for the poor, but it will suck even worse for the fragile members of society to let this reach crisis level all at once without doing all we can to slow the spread. That includes school closures.

this is just an assumption you are making. you have no proof of that whatsoever. for example, we are well off immigrants but introverts with no family whatsoever. if DH and i both ended in a hospital our kids would go to foster care.

It's smart, but did the families get any heads-up at all?

I spoke to a LCPS parent yesterday. They have a good remote schooling system in place so during snow days, they're able to provide schooling to kids whilst at home, so they're just extending those capabilities.

If schools close we need families that can afford to stay home volunteer to take some of the kids that cannot. We need to help each other.

But social distancing... people don’t want additional children in their house.

My friend who is an LCPS teacher says otherwise. She said they have no remote learning plan for this.

Then don’t. But it’s the right thing to do.

That's not helping each other. That's expecting someone to expose themselves and their families to whatever your kid may have or be carrying.

The right thing to do is to limit social exposure so this virus can burn itself out as fast as possible.

If people need neighbors to watch their kids, that means the parent neighbors are still hoing to work and getting a lot of exposure...and bringing it to their kids. Bringing those kids into my home undercuts the efforts we are making to not go to work.

I chimed in on this thread on Monday saying I thought it was too soon. I have completely changed my mind. It is not too soon.

OP is 100% right. Schools need to close immediately.

When you see a case positive, that means it was there at least 14 days! You never know who have got it!

Oh and btw, they should pay for keeping the school running out of their pocket as it is huge cost. Any teachers who get sick or families of those who die should have a right to sue the group for damages.
I'm sure the dead teachers will be comforted by the idea of their heirs being able to sue. Dumb @ss
