I think there are a lot of people like that....but chances are you won't have both parents hospitalized. And most likely, a friend's parents or neighbor would help out for a few weeks.

Up here in MA, schools are starting to close for "deep cleaning" as more and more people actually get tested and we realize that we have many more cases. Rumor is that the entire Boston system will shut down next week. We'll see.

I'm not panicked, but I think social distancing is important. Who in their right mind wouldn't believe Dr. Fauci? He's a sane, competent doctor who is not the least bit alarmist. At 1% fatality, we're looking a half a million deaths, if a typically flu season kills 50.000. He's also talked about flattening the curve.

I’ve already pulled my preschooler out. I’m able to do so financially though it’s tight, and I’m not in peak health so I am of two minds about it. I’m doing it to help protect our family and for the greater good. I firmly believe all of us who are able should be doing it now. I grew up working class and I believe the poor will deal with closures as they happen, and that should be the main factor in deciding whether should close.

On an individual level, I’m also going to bed as early as I can, washing hands, and sticking more to walks and yard play rather than going to playgrounds. I’m kind of in a holding pattern to see how things play out and how our governments respond over the next 2-3 weeks.

^ Sorry, typo. I meant how closures affect the poor should NOT be the main factor. It should be a consideration, but not the main one.

First of all, besides being the proper public health decision to close schools, I have a newborn at home and an elderly relative living with us for the next few months. When I read all the crap on facebook and twitter like "But but but think about the poor people with no food! Think about us folks who have jobs and have to work! Don't close schools" I realized this had become a politicized issue that is probably clouding officials' judgments. Like, I'm sorry that you have a rough life but I am not putting my family, young and old, at risk because poor people have a rough life. I'm keeping my kids home

That's fine, keep YOUR kids home. Don't try to demand what should be done with other people's kids.

+1. You should have stocked up already and be keeping your newborn and elderly relative inside to keep them safe. Order online if you need more. You should be doing this even IF the schools are closed. DOn't depend on the actions of others to keep you safe!!

I'm not sure how considering the effects of closures on people besides your visiting elderly relative means it's politicized. This is what our elected laders are supposed to do. They serve the entire community, not just you.

I said a week ago was too early to close schools, but I think now and next week is the right time. There are cases and some local transmission. It’s a good time to start closing things.

I think Fairfax and Arlington will close next week.

There are degrees of social distancing. Airports I’m avoiding. Local parks I am not.
