Getting into St. Albans

Anonymous
It's the "best post ever" because it shows that you don't have to be a genius or particularly special to get into St. Albans. It also shows that entitled Beauvoir students don't have a lock on the school. It debunks the myth surrounding this "exclusive" school. It shows that's the school's reputation must be inflated. Is that enough info for you?

How does this change Beauvoir's lock on admission to STA? It is still MUCH EASIER to get into STA from BEAUVOIR. PERIOD!!

An anecdotal admission for NOVA does not disprove this fact. Pure and simple.

Plus this was admissions for 6th grade when the Beauvoir kids are in. Like most of the k-12 schools it does expand at several points so I assume by the end only about 25-30% of the kids have come from Beauvoir.

Pretty nice lock if 1/4 to 1/3 of kids come from Beauvoir. How many private and public schools are in the D.C. area ? (conservative guess ... over 100)

Does anyone know roughly how many Beauvoir boys are committed to St. Albans for 4th grade in the fall? Or more directly, how many slots remain for non-Beauvoir applicants?

Good grades from strong VA public...but he's not a freak genius. Good athlete, but no prodigy. No particular art/music achievement. VA kids are perhaps a little advantaged in that they're underrepresented there. Basically a well-rounded kid who comes across as a nice boy. I believe the most selective DC privates are somewhat like the Ivies in that they could fill classes with uber-smart kids...so they're seeking to create a well-rounded class. I think STA in particular is looking for a good fit for their strong culture...so it's not all about numbers.

Thanks for this post. By "good grades" do you mean mostly A's and B's or all A's or what?

How has he been doing? Is he challenged or overchallenged? Does he like the school?

There are many boys at STA that had high nineties plus are good at sports and/or arts.

How is that different from any of the k-12 schools where most of the kids who start in prek continue through 12th grade. I suspect the Cathedral schools pattern is no different from the others and if anything they may have more fall off because they do require an applicaiton process at 4th.

Does a single school provide 1/3 of the students to Landon?

At last check Landon did not have a pk-3 school on its campus with which it is affiliated. Do you really consider Beauvoir and NCS and St A to be completely unaffiliated schools? And why on earth are you so uptight about it? Send your kid to Landon if that's your preference. I dont have a kid at any of these schools but do ahve one applyiing to St A. For the grade we are interested in the number of applicants to spaces seems to be about the same as at the other schools he's applying to so I don't see it as any different.

On the contrary, tis you with the tight sphincter, Madame.

I agree, PP. My first thought after reading was "whoa nelly". Hope STA sniffs out the funkiness there.

Sorry - I just don't subscribe to the Beauvoir conspiracy theories.

No conspiracy theory here. Simply theory based on fact and the history of admissions to STA. The easiest admission path to STA is via Beauvoir. I can't name another school that provides an easier path/route to Holton-Arms, Sidwell, Maret, GDS, Landon except for Beauvoir to NCS.

Isn't the easiest path to Sidwell, Maret and GDS's 4th grade to start there in Prek and K? I think there are a few spots at 1st and 3rd at some of them but otherwise you need to be there earlier.

Yes, if you are already attending STA then the easiest route to the 9th grade at STA is if you are already a STA student in the 7th grade. I suspect this is also true for Sidwell, Maret and GDS. But, if you are not a student at STA the easiet route is via Beauvoir. What is the easiest route to Holton-Arms or Landon if you are not a current student of those schools?

This is not an apples to apples comparison. There is no admission process at 3rd grade to enter 4th grade if you are already enrolled at Sidwell, Maret and GDS. This is automatic unless one is counseled out. There is an admission process at 3rd grade to enter 4th grade at NCS and St. Albans. This is not automatic from Beauvoir. Yes, many Beauvoir kids get accepted but there are some who don't, and some who are counseled not to even bother to apply.
