Anyone have a short child at age 1-2 who shot up?

Anonymous
My kid is really low on the growth percentile chart (10%) and DH and I are tall. His doctor is looking into some things for us. He has always been at this curve so he may just be small. Anyone have a child who was short during the baby years and average or tall later in life?

** Also if he is short, he is fine. It's not an issue. Just wondering if this is more common than we think and maybe no medical concern.

For what it's worth, he is predicted to be 5'3.
DH is 6'3
Other DS is on track to be 6'2

Mom's Brother 1 6', Brother 2 6', Grandmother 5'4 Grandfather was 5'8
Dad's brother is 6'2, Grandmother was 5'10, Grandfather was 5'10

I'm just curious if anyone has a story like this where DS was on track to be a solid 5" under the shortest person in the family, and a good foot under most of the male relatives. Do we need to look into further testing?

He is 20months old

How tall was your father OP? The pediatrician said the father’s height and the mother’s father’s height were highly predictive. My son is short and always has been. He is now on track to be about halfway between his father and my father.

DS 1= Tracking to be 6'2
DS 2= Tracking to be 5'3 adult height, 20months

Mom= 5'4
Mom's Brother 1 & Brother 2= Both over 6'
Mom's Mom= 5'4
Mom's Dad= 5'8

Dad= 6'3
Dad's Brother= 6'2
Dad's Mom= 5'10
Dad's Dad= 5'11

I find it odd he is smaller than the shortest female?

My daughter was 20th percentile for height and under 10th for weight consistently until about 4, when she started shooting up. By 6 she was right at 50th percentile for height and 35-40th for weight and has stayed there for the last 2.5 years.

How tall were you, your DH and your relatives when they were 20 months old?

I think 20 months is really young to be considering his adult height.

DS "big" at birth- almost 9 pounds and 22 inches
"small" from age 1-10 - 60th-70th percentile in height- but always on the "shorter side" when compared to local peers - shortest in class at K-1, one of the shortest in grades 2-4

Now DS is in 6th grade and in the 90th percentile for height and is on the tall side of the middle in his class... and is growing like a weed! Guessing he will end up near the middle...

If your DS is healthy growing and staying on the curve I wouldn't worry about it, all kids grow at different rates. You have many years ahead of you, I would try not to stress about his adult height before he's even 2 years old.

You've got me confused here. 10th percentile should be tracking to be 5'6", shouldn't it? The reason I know that is that it's my percentile and height. When I was your son's age I was 5th percentile height. I'm not sure that's what you want to hear, but I guess doubling percentile is good news?

My kids' mother was from a tall family like your husband. My younger son was 40th percentile at his 4 year old check up and was 66th percentile at his 6 year old check up. So, these things can change over time.

Op I am a female and I am 5’2. I am pretty short. 5’3 for a male is quite short- and seems shorter than 10th percentile. My kid is in the 20th percentile and I think that would translate to like 5’8 in adulthood. Are you sure 10th percentile would be 5’3?

He is 20m and 31 inches. The calculator I used put him at 5'4.
I'm wondering if he may already have Constitutional growth delay which my siblings had and what age that would be tested? (it's usually a bone scan)
The reason his short height has become an issue is because he had another odd health concern with his teeth development and is getting tested for celiac soon, not sure if it is related. Trying to figure out if this is a medical reason or it's possible that is his natural curve.

My brothers are over 6' tall but were closer to 5'6 or 5'7 at 16 years old. They didn't take growth hormones or anything. Just wondering if this is something that would already start trending at 20m. He has always been on exactly the 10% curve dropping up and down about 5 percent, but the doctors have said it's hard to do length at this age so his curve has stayed the same from birth.

But if he is 60-70% percentile he was always on the taller side. So I don't find it at all surprising he continued on the taller side. He could have unusually tall classmates but it doesn't make him short.

Op those grandpas are pretty short. That might be where it’s coming from? 5’8 is petite for a man and 5’10 just average. My dad is 5’8 and I’m just 5’1 because of that. My mom is 5’6.

I have girls but was told you take the height they are at 2 and double it. Is that what they say for boys too?

My dad is 5'8 (short), but both of my brothers are 6'+ (avg/tall)
My husband's dad is 5'11 (average, or taller than at least on percentage chart), it is my husband's mom that is 5'10 which is tall for a woman.

Yes, they say double it.
I am thinking he has constitutional growth delay, which is what the pediatrician thinks may also be the issue. It would mean at peak periods of growth (toddlerhood + puberty) he trends behind his peers. In puberty, he will likely be 2-3 years behind but likely hit what would be the average of my husband and I which is about 5'11 as his adult height. Most generations are taller than the next. My brothers are 4 inches taller than my dad and my husband is 5 inches taller than his dad.
