ANOTHER Cap Hill PK3 Lottery Q

This is our list:

1. Maury Elementary School (IB)
2. Brent Elementary School
3. Peabody Elementary School
4. School-Within-School
5. Tyler Elementary School (Dual Language)
6. Washington Yu Ying PCS
7. Creative Minds International PCS

Should I add more schools? Remove Yu Ying and CMI PCS? I understand Maury is a stretch (Brent is a far fetched dream), but I am hoping we'll get lucky. We live two blocks away from Maury and work in Crystal City. If we don't get into Maury and Top 4, we do have an excellent daycare in Arlington. Thank you!

OP--no sibling preference.

I would add Appletree and Miner. Although I am a big fan of just letting kids stay in daycare until K as long as it's working! Lots of advantages to that route, albeit a bit more expensive.

Why on earth would you drive that far for Creative Minds?

No Two Rivers or Inspired Teaching? It is unclear why you have CMI and not those two.

You need to add a few safeties - Appletree Oklahoma and Lincoln Park, maybe Appletree SW. How far are you willing to commute?
Anonymous
I would choose Payne over Miner depending on your location. Although you probably have a better chance of getting in at Miner.

If you're ok with not getting in anywhere this is a fine list. If your lottery draw is bad enough that you don't get into Maury IB, you are not going to get into schools 2-6 on your list.

If you want other nearby schools where you have a better chance, consider if you'd prefer JO Wilson, Appletree Lincoln Park and OK Ave, Browne, Wheatley, Friendship Blow-Pierce, Center City Capitol Hill, or Friendship Chamberlain to your current daycare. But it's ok to stay with private daycare for another year and do the lottery again for PK4.

Look at Langley, Langdon, and Friendship Armstrong for possibilities if your number is bad.

As long as I can get across the bridge to Arlington; the will power is there . I am thinking Yu Ying and International PCS will be a no go.

I am ok with not getting in anywhere due to our daycare.

Then Appletree SW might be one to consider - you could hop right on 395 from SW. They should have ample aftercare, too.

In addition to Brent, you will not get into Peabody for PK3- only IB kids get in (we are IB for Peabody and were 37 on the waitlist for PK3 2 years ago with IB preference; given the demographics of our neighborhood I don't see this changing). At Brent two years ago, a parent told us that only two kids in the PK3 class were non-siblings. If you really want to get into PK3, you probably don't want to waste those spots on schools you have no chance of getting into.

Another way to think of this is any number that gets you into Brent, also gets you into Maury. So even on your list you have no way of getting in so you could drop it to create more room for options.

(and yes I know all too well about Brent's numbers and there is no way anyone from OOB is getting in, just sharing another perspective).

OP--revised list:

1. Maury Elementary School (IB)
2. Payne Elementary School
3. Peabody Elementary School
4. School-Within-School
5. Tyler Elementary School (Dual Language)
6. Washington Yu Ying PCS
7. AppleTree PCS – Southwest
8. AppleTree PCS – Lincoln Park

How do you request proximity for Payne? I left Peabody on my list just in case.
