Don't worry. I think the war in Ukraine will end next year, in about 8 months.

The Russian Central Bank raised interest rates to 21% and according to the public statement made there was no consideration of keeping it unchanged and it almost went to 22%.

Not sure if you realize what means? The higher the interest rate goes, the less incremental impact it has on the economy. Why? Because there is (percentage-wise) less and less impact the higher that interest rates go, the less impact it has on the economy. Ex. going from 20% to 21% is about a 5% difference, whereas if the US changes from 4.61% to 4.83%, that's also about 5%. The main difference though is that if someone can't take out a loan to repay a 20% interest rate, why would they pay 21%? This means that Russia's private economy is effectively dead. The Russian Government is intentionally forcing all small businesses to shut down, to force their workers either into military service or state run military factories.

Add to this the Rouble is about 98.7 to the USD, and that "doing business with German pharmaceutical" statement is likely to be very very costly for Russians and certainly not affordable by the average citizen there.

I also believe the Russian hate for Ukraine driving the war is drying up. Even Solovyov is fighting to stay relevant.

Did I mention that I think he'll be off-air between Jan and Mar?

I believe this winter will be especially harsh for average Russian citizens. It's unfortunate, but even if the West wanted to assist, nothing can be done. To coin a phrase from the first line of William Shakespeare's Richard III: "now is the winter of our discontent".

Again, 8 months.

Now, change “Russia” to “Ukraine” and you will be right

Ukraine was already hanging on to dear life, Trump's betray will finish them off.

Trumps election/Ukraine seems to be bringing down the German government as well.

Hilariously, Putin will be the last one standing despite all the "he's dying of cancer" and "he's going to get thrown out of office" posts around here.

If the US cuts off intelligence and money to Ukraine, they'll be hard pressed to continue the fight. As it stands, it seems like the slaughter has left them with fewer and fewer men to join the battle.

It is not in America's interest to support anyone in this fight.

It could push Ukraine to arm themselves with nuclear weapons again.

Not with Trump in power. Actually this is one of the few areas where I agree with him. It's an unwinnable war. Fighting to the last Ukrainian is not going to result in a more just situation.

Russia’s money is running out. If we can keep this up for another year, Russia will give up on more favourable terms for Ukraine.

But if stupid Republicans pressure Ukraine to give in, then Putin’s dictatorship won - he won over Ukraine,NATO, EU. US will be leaking his boots.

I’m curious though. Will the West lift the Russian sanctions after the war?

If so, it will be a total victory for Putin.

It really is in America's interest to support Ukraine. Both for the good reasons - supporting a country defending itself from invasion - and for more realpolitik reasons - severally weakening both our own and the world's main adversary. But yes, Ukraine will crumble if the US withholds support. That's when the real problems begin. 10 years from now people will be wondering why we were such idiots. Like Obama letting Crimea slide. Russian imperialism is going to be a problem until they lose - whether it's in Ukraine or Estonia or Poland. And if we are not going to commit our own military - which we shouldn't - we need to give Ukrainians the means to defend themselves. And Europe really needs to get their act together and stop being such parasites, particularly all the countries not making 2 percent. This is their neighborhood. Poland is going to have the most powerful military in Europe soon. Because they have that border with Russia and they are consequently spending 5 percent. We are gaming in some really bad scenarios if Russia is not defeated in Ukraine.

Among the many things Ukrainians are furious about these days, the latest is that apparently a third of the refugees from Mariupol have decided to actually return to the city and live under Russian rule. Not a good sign for the letter agencies and their plans for launching an insurrection after the end of the war.

Russia is using antiquated strategy from decades ago where you saturate an area with artillery fire to weaken it then rush in with vehicles and human wave attacks. This is a huge failure and why they can’t win against Ukraine.

It's sunny, everything is green and dudes are in short sleeves. How bad are things going for Ukraine to be rolling out compilations of old footage like this?

Finally something that might actually give Ukraine a chance:

To the last Ukrainian was only supposed to be a meme.

So Ds are playing hardball and gonna finally shut down our government on December 20th, unless Ukraine gets some funding for the last time? That will make Trump administration rather unhappy as they want to hit the ground running on Jan 20th.

They're not going to do that. But I don't think Trump is going to be as anti-Ukraine as people expect. Most Republicans in Congress and the Senate are fairly pro-Ukraine. And the national interest is for Russia to lose. But we shall see.
