Sw waterfront area -middle school options

Anonymous
Hello,

We are considering moving to SW but I cant find middle school info. My daughter will be starting 6th grade and we are not from this area. How do I find out what middle school she will go to? Do I have options? We cant afford private school unless its really affordable

Most of SW feeds into Jefferson.

There are just not a lot of schools in that area other than Jefferson. Are you comfortable sending her on the metro or city bus?

Would you recommend that school? They don’t offer transportation?

Unless the student has special needs and is bussed to their assigned school or a student goes to a charter where transportation is arranged through the parents or the school, there is no DCPS school transportation. No school busses in DC.

Without knowing more about your child, it's hard to recommend. Hardly any schools in DC offer any transportation.

Tell us what kind of school you are looking for and we can be more helpful. If you'd like to be on the blue and orange lines, perhaps consider Eliot-Hine.

Do you currently live in an urban area of the country? If not, I think SW Middle School would not be the best match for your family.

Is this because you work in SW? I would check out being further in Virginia on the orange/blue lines. The schools are better out there.

DC public schools do not provide transportation; your child does receive a Smartrip card that entitles them to unlimited free rides on the Metrobus or the Metrorail.

If you do not like the school you are in-boundary for (IB for short) you can enter the lottery to see if you get a slot at another DCPS or a charter school.

YOu can learn about all DC public schools here https://dcschoolreportcard.org/

YOu can see how far these schools are from you here http://find.myschooldc.org/

This video explains the lottery system very well https://dcschoolreportcard.org/

Hope this helps!

Thank you everyone. Im a single mom who will be commuting to Arlington. I like an urban feel so thought that area would be great, did not know DC did not provide bus services to students. I will check out areas in VA

Don’t do this. Get the urban experience on the weekend. You’ll try it for a few years then leave and start a thread about how terrible the schools are.
You need to go into this stuff with eyes open. A few links for the lottery won’t help.

Don’t do what? Live in Arlington? Your reply doesn’t make sense.

Applying for 6th grade for the lottery is really hard. Most charters that start at middle school start in 5th grade. The # of 6th grade slots are really slim
