Sw waterfront area -middle school options

Op, as another poster just noted, most charters begin in 5th grade, so your chances of getting in somewhere through the lottery are very slim.

If you want to live in the city I’d look at any school inbounds for Deal or Hardy. There are a few other DCPS middle schools people consider, but mostly the folks who give those a try already live in neighborhood and have other reasons for staying. In my view, nobody who prioritized education actively moves into the Jefferson school district with a middle schooler, unless they have private school as a backup. Then again, if you’re looking to rent, moving could be your backup.

Given that you’ll be working in Arlington, I second motions that you give living there a serious look.

Yes, normally I would not say live in Arlington to anyone (I'm a city person), but, someone with a job there and a 6th grader - live in Arlington. Then again I know nothing about it and it's huge so you may need to go to the suburbs board to learn more.

Don’t do this. Get the urban experience on the weekend. You’ll try it for a few years then leave and start a thread about how terrible the schools are.
You need to go into this stuff with eyes open. A few links for the lottery won’t help.

Don’t do what? Live in Arlington? Your reply doesn’t make sense.

Don't reverse commute. Even if you had no kids I would say its 50-50 living in DC vs living in a relatively urban part of Arlington and sacrificing some (but NOT all) urban vibe for a shorter commute.

Given that the school thing is so much simpler in Arlco, that a shorter commute is more important to a single parent, and that you likely will spend less time going out than someone without kids, I think the case for Arlington is more dramatic.

Where in Arlington will you be working? Rosslyn? Crystal City?

I don't think anyone would recommend Jefferson. yes, you will get some boosters about how its "changing" but the school body is overwhelmingly high poverty and underperforming. Brent elem feeds to Jefferson and if they send more than 5 kids out of 5th grade to Jefferson I would be surprised.

Good grief! OP, can't you look up schools on one of the standard ranking web sites, e.g. School Digger.com or Great Schools.com and check out school demographics like everybody else?

Hint: Few or no high SES white kids, and no serious test-in system (e.g. Banneker HS in DC) and a Metro area school isn't doing well. Avoid. How could anybody be this clueless.

Everything about your post is gross, racist and uninformed. "no high SES white kids", Banneker isn't "serious"? I don't even understand what you mean by the bolded.

I am a Jefferson teacher (and also a DCPS parent) and YES there are more than 5 Brent families here.

High income families from Brent? Doubt it. And would you send your own kid there if you had other options?

Get a life. PP posted that without a serious test-in program (e.g. Banneker) and/or a cohort of high SES students (who happen to be mostly white in this particular city) a DC public school can't be that great.

Reality sucks.

There actually a a dozen high SES Brent families at Jefferson. Some had other options and didn't take them. To each his or her own.
