| For example, let’s say a car is listed with an “online price” of $30,000, but then has “Black Friday” savings of $1700 and “Extra Special” savings of $1200, bringing it down to $27,100. Are you ever able to talk them down from THAT price? Will they ever go lower than the current promotions? |
I will certainly try. But not like the way you are describing. You need to make dealers compete for your purchase. |
| yes- cars are not typically a "Black Friday" purchase. |
They are all running the same promotions. Currently, I have both saying they are offering the promotions mentioned above. What should I do from here? Should I say something like, “X dealer is offering the same thing but I’d like to buy from you? Can you beat them?” |
Send emails to 4-5 dealers - clearly describe which car you wnat - model, make, color if you know, options...etc. Tell them you plan to buy this Thanksving wkd. Ask them to give you "out the door" price. Have them include, tax, tag, all incentives, dealer mark-down...etc. Once they return your email w/ price quote, use that price to let them compete against each other. it will take some time/effort but it's worth your time |
This is what I’ve done with two thus far, and they came back with identical quotes. I’ll add a couple more now. Thanks! |
good luck. also keep in mind, they may still try to jerk you around even with the "out the door price" agreed on. when you go in to sign the paper work, be ready and be willing to walk out if you feel they are trying to pull a fast one on you. play tough. |

As other poster noted, do your research, get a "feel" for what the price may be, then go to a dealer, test the car, then offer them price 10% below their stated price. Now the trick is, if they decide to chat further, make you sit down, grab pen and paper, you know that your low-ball offer is not a ridiculous as you initially thought. negotiate for an hour or two (a further indication that they may be able to sell you the car for the price you wanted), then find a reason to walk out, say "I'll come back and continue tomorrow" or something similar, and voila, they'll match your price. This worked for me twice and on another two occasions a family member and a friend called me from the negotiation table. I asked "how long have you sat there"? In both cases it was approx 2 hours, I said "give them a price $1000 less than their "best" price and start walking out if prices is not met. In both cases they started walking and salesman came after them and gave them the price they wanted.
Best of luck! |
| Also: wait. They’ll come back to you with better prices. |
