1. By definition, any mass shooter is mentally ill.

2. The APA no longer considers trans identity as a mental disorder.

Part of the background check should look into mental health, perhaps a question about transitioning

Let's keep it simple. BAN assault weapons. Then move on to severely regulating the rest of these killing tools.

That won't work.

Assault weapons are just scary looking rifles.

Also sniper rifles are the same as hunting rifles.

That's so cute. No they explode and pulverize the little children they are fired upon. All the others just kill them dead. Do you have children?

The shooter could have done exactly the same thing with any other rifle, shotgun, or handgun. There is no feature on that rifle that increased lethality against unarmed students and staff.

To be clear, handgun bullets do not have the same effect on the body and are far easier to survive than rifle bullets.

-Healthcare worker.

Shooter was armed with a Keltec rifle that is chambered in 9mm.

Point stands.

Agree. It was a gun shooting out handgun bullets. Point stands.

No it doesn't. The same bullet shot from a handgun makes a drillhole in the body, but from a rifle, creates an inches wide tunnel, decimates tissue, much more widespread damage. 9-mm from handgun vs rifle produces completely different results in a body. Even gun nuts that are so happy to tell people that "an AR-15 is just a scarier looking regular rifle, dummy!" apparently don't know the difference, I guess?

You are missing the point.

The features of an assault weapon do not make a difference at close range. An assault weapon does not have to be chambered in 5.56. It can be chambered in 9mm, such as the Keltec rifle this person wielded.

A flash hider does not increase leathality at close range. A pistol grip does not increase leathality at short range. A bayonet lug does not increase leathality at close range unless you have a bayonet mounted (and arguably makes it worse should you put a bayonet on the firearm and shoot with it). A grenade launcher doesn't make it more leathal at short range. A properly sized fixed vs sliding stock does not make it more leathal at short range. The magazine size can be just as large as a pistol.

At long ranges,sure rifles shine.

At close ranges yes there is still a difference as the barrel of the rifle causes the same caliber to fire with greater force and velocity which in turn affects the damage impact on bone and soft tissue. Even at close range

PP here- Its relevant because its a possible (likely) motive for the shooting. A conservative school that likely didn't support this student in the way they thought they should be supported. In a state that is make life hell for trans people. It’s as relevant as any other motive, why bury it? I'm guessing you don't have an issue around reporting when a white supremicist shoots up a Black church? It’s just seems like disingenuious reporting by a serious new outlet.

why do you think the school was conservative? It is presbytarian...

Someone posted earlier that the school is PCA, not PCUSA. That’s the more conservative flavor of Presbyterian.

Thank you for posting that. I've been very confused about it since I thought Presbyterians were just less formal Episcopalians. Didn't realize that there's an entire world of offshoot flavors.

Covenant school is a feeder school for Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA), also PCA associated. governor lees kids graduated from CPA. The same governor who is banning trans healthcare for minors, etc. really surprised this connection hasn’t been talked about. Any yes, the covenant families are likely republicans who support Lee and rep ogles.

Well this is interesting. Curious why nobody on the news mentioned this yet.

Because that is speculation at best. If it comes out in the manifesto that this was a reason it will be talked about.

Not sure why conservative lunkheads aren’t more nervous. Lots of queer people are mad as hell and aren’t going to take it anymore. I won’t be surprised if they fight back like this more going forward. It’s not like queer people are meek.

These t-shirts were sold on Amazon and only recently removed after receiving complaints.

A similar t-shirt on a kid who met with Rand Paul

It is fascinating to see conservatives trashing a shirt about using guns to secure rights for yourself when they're constantly telling us that's the reason for second amendment. Amazon sells plenty of Molon Labe stickers which is essentially the same message.

+1 Tons and tons of “Come and Take Them” shirts and bumper stickers etc.

Sane people don't go around mass murdering people. Clearly this woman was mentally ill (even her parents had concerns about her well-being). The problem is mental illness, not guns.

+1. Try buying an AR-15 in Japan and see how it goes.

Or literally any other country. Australia and the UK both banned such weapons (and many other types of guns) after massacres and haven’t had any school shootings since.

In Japan you can literally walk around drunk and never have to worry about being robbed. It is one of the safest countries in the world and that isn't due to weapons. For whatever reason post WW2, Japanese culture changed such that violence and violent crime is exceedingly rare.

They do have the occasional knifing attack, like 19 killed in this event a few years ago.

I'll trade an occasional knifing attack that kills 19 over the 40,000 annual deaths by guns any time. You?

Mental illness is everywhere and in every country but most don't have the mass shootings that we have here. Why can't it be both? Mental illness AND guns? Why can't we fix both?

Mental illness combined with easy access to guns.

Every other country has mental illness. That is not a unique American thing.

Most other countries don't have the easy access to guns that the US has

So you agree that to buy a gun you should have to undergo a mental health test? That would help, would it not?

Truly sick people can lie on a mental health test to be able to buy a gun. The solution is BAN the assault weapons and have a very strict background check for all other handguns. That’s it. That’s the solution.

So if that is true then what should we do to prevent mentally unstable individuals from getting ahold of a gun?

Absolutely. But since Republicans will never allow that, we have to call them out on their "MENTAL HEALTH" nattering to see if they will prove they believe it's the main reason behind gun violence by voting to make mental health checks mandatory for anyone to own a gun. Once they say, oh no, we can't do that, we know they are bluffing.

Mental illness = killing your self and/or immediate family members

Mental illness + easy access to assault rifles = killing yourself before you first shoot up little kids in schools

Take your pick

I think a lot of the young shooters have suicide by cop intentions.
