McCarthy had no power to give away. That’s how he found himself in this position. But Boehner could still manage to get some things done despite being undercut by Ryan-Cantor-McCarthy. The Tea Party whackos were another matter as they were mostly a distraction because of the sizable GOP majority of more than 240 members.

Not suggesting in any way that it's the D's problem to solve, but that the Ds could capitalize on the chaos to secure committee seats, debt ceiling votes, whatever else. I think Pelosi is right and had the Rs been the leaders during 1/6, we would not be a (version of a) democracy today. We all have to live here for the next 2 years, and I don't want to just see who the adults are - I want a functioning government that can at the very least ensure our country continues to exist.

They wouldn’t secure any of those things. All those things require separate House votes, not dictates of the Speaker. Everything the House does for the next two years will require a separate vote to come to the floor.

But the Speaker controls what the House votes on. A sane Speaker could just tell the crazies to stuff it and put a debt ceiling vote on the floor, get all 212 Democratic votes and a handful of Republican votes. But one who is captive to the crazies will just never let that vote happen.

No. That’s not how it works. The Speaker proposes the schedule but there are 2 or 3 procedural votes to bring any bill to the floor. Votes to “Move the Previous Question” and to “Adopt the Rule” and maybe a minority motion to recommit the rule before the vote to adopt it.

GOP use their speeches to describe a mythical past and trash Dems.
Democrats use their speeches to remind voters of policy - the Good that Dems have passed, the Bad of rolling back voting rights, and the Ugly of SCOTUS's removal of woman's right to privacy.
