VA Public Elementary Schools 101

Anonymous
I'm beginning research into VA public elementary schools to see if it could be an option for our family. Are there any recent key threads or resources that provide a good overview or discuss ongoing/upcoming changes to be aware of? Also, based on a forum search, it sounds like VA schools don't hold open houses for prospective families - is that correct?

Thank you in advance

Some schools have tours for Kindergarten families in the spring. And there is a K info night with representatives from every school. Otherwise you can reach out to the individual schools - they’re usually happy to answer questions.

What are the budget and commute(s)? That has a big impact on recommendations.

Commute to Arlington and DC. Entry class would be K. Budget ~$1M.

Most public elementary schools do not hold open houses for prospective families. They do hold kindergarten orientation for those families that live in the boundaries and whose children will attend the following year.

Quite frankly, I don’t want random people going through my children’s school. It’s a safety issue.

Since they are funded by the county and you would not be paying tuition, they have no incentive to provide that access. And people like me would complain if they did.

If you wind up in Arlington, you can either attend the open house at your child’s neighborhood ES, usually held the week before K starts, or you can visit the public option schools (lottery schools) during open houses/tours held in the late winter prior to the lottery application deadline.

Arlington has K information sessions starting in January or February for ALL schools, not just option schools. Check back here:

OP, there are many public schools in Virginia. You're going to need to look at specific schools in this big Commonwealth to find info on open houses.

S/he clarified they are commuting to Arlington and DC. So obviously looking near there, not the entire Commonwealth.

I realize my question is very open-ended. Currently have almost zero familiarity with the massive VA public school system, so wanted to see if there were any FAQ or useful threads to provide some initial orientation. Will check the websites and talk to people we know. Thank you to those who provided info about the open houses/info sessions.

There are multiple public school systems in Northern Virginia, including:
Arlington https://www.apsva.us/
Falls Church City https://www.fccps.org/
Alexandria City https://www.acps.k12.va.us/
Fairfax County https://www.fcps.edu/
Loudoun County https://www.lcps.org/

And more I'm sure as you move away from DC.

They have to comply with Virginia DOE rules and regulations, but they are independently managed.

Only maps I could find...

The state provides a lot of information on schools. You can see school quality profiles here: http://schoolquality.virginia.gov/

You can look at test results by different demographics across schools here: https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/apex/f?p=152:1:13970051038793:::::

I think you need to ask specific questions. "Tell me about VA public schools" is not a legitimate question that anyone can answer.

Identify what your concerns are and specify what your experience/expectation are (i.e. did you go to public school as a kid?) I didn't go to public school, but I was alive and aware that there were public schools. So, surely you know SOMETHING about public schools. We don't need to start from square 1.

Those who say budget + commute are the primary decision drivers are right.

As for finding out about specific schools, nothing you hear on DCUM will/should make or brake your decisions -- you have NO idea who we are and whether our standards are similar to yours. You will probably need to go to a few schools and see what you think of them in person. If there are no "open houses" -- how do you do that???? Well, almost all have "open houses" before school starts. You could just walk around to see the building and get a feel for the community. No one will notice if you wander into a few classrooms and just look around. You could also go to next month's PTA mtg. The principal is often at those. It may not be a perfect data point, but it IS a data point. Keep an eye on the school's website -- many elementary schools have family events -- a fall festival, a science night, an artist/author's day. They don't check to see if you are actually a parents for these events.

If you are looking for a "concierge" experience, you aren't going to find it in a public school. They exist to serve kids, but they do not have "marketing" departments like private schools. They aren't trying to "woo" you. Come, or don't. ... they are not going to be disappointed if you decide to spend $300K for private school tuition over the next 8 yrs.

FCPS is the gold standard. It’s a big and kind of weird and ultra competitive system. APS is softer. It’s mediocre-plus with a lot of window dressing.
