I think you need to ask specific questions. "Tell me about VA public schools" is not a legitimate question that anyone can answer. Identify what your concerns are and specify what your experience/expectation are (i.e. did you go to public school as a kid?) I didn't go to public school, but I was alive and aware that there were public schools. So, surely you know SOMETHING about public schools. We don't need to start from square 1. Those who say budget + commute are the primary decision drivers are right. As for finding out about specific schools, nothing you hear on DCUM will/should make or brake your decisions -- you have NO idea who we are and whether our standards are similar to yours. You will probably need to go to a few schools and see what you think of them in person. If there are no "open houses" -- how do you do that???? Well, almost all have "open houses" before school starts. You could just walk around to see the building and get a feel for the community. No one will notice if you wander into a few classrooms and just look around. You could also go to next month's PTA mtg. The principal is often at those. It may not be a perfect data point, but it IS a data point. Keep an eye on the school's website -- many elementary schools have family events -- a fall festival, a science night, an artist/author's day. They don't check to see if you are actually a parents for these events. If you are looking for a "concierge" experience, you aren't going to find it in a public school. They exist to serve kids, but they do not have "marketing" departments like private schools. They aren't trying to "woo" you. Come, or don't. ... they are not going to be disappointed if you decide to spend $300K for private school tuition over the next 8 yrs.
