I realize my question is very open-ended. Currently have almost zero familiarity with the massive VA public school system, so wanted to see if there were any FAQ or useful threads to provide some initial orientation. Will check the websites and talk to people we know. Thank you to those who provided info about the open houses/info sessions.[/quote]

There are multiple public school systems in Northern Virginia, including: 
Arlington https://www.apsva.us/
Falls Church City https://www.fccps.org/
Alexandria City https://www.acps.k12.va.us/
Fairfax County https://www.fcps.edu/
Loudoun County https://www.lcps.org/

And more I'm sure as you move away from DC.

They have to comply with Virginia DOE rules and regulations, but they are independently managed.
