Exercise with minor injury?

Anonymous
I have have only been exercising for a week. Mostly walking on a treadmill at the gym at a brisk pace. Last night, I stepped off a stair onto a shoe and rolled my ankle. It hurt a lot initially and is still sore today but it isn't swollen, just really tender. I can feel it with each step but it isn't painful, just noticeable.

Am I okay to keep exercising?

I wouldn't do anything that puts weight or stress on the injured area.

Does your gym have a "hand cycle" machine? I've used that after spraining my ankle. It's hard!

I would try and take it easy on your ankle, and when it feels less tender, do some ankle exercises. Lay down (or stand up on one leg) and try and write each letter of the alphabet with your foot/toes. Do this 2x a day.

You can likely do some upper body strength and weights exercises. But if you are really new to exercise, you don't want to further injure yourself.

You can find seated exercise videos on YouTube that will get your blood moving without putting weight on your foot
