| I am not trying to start something but am curious-is it easier for a white girl to get in then an Asian girl? (Our neighbor said it is like college admission and they have quotas). |
| No. They do not have quotas. They do blind admissions. |
|
No quotas regarding race or sex! The misinformation about all things TJ is maddening.
There are limited number of slots for counties other than Fairfax based on what those jurisdictions opted to pay for. |
| I don’t think any white girls go to TJ. |
Clearly you don't think much. |
There are a limited number of slots for Fairfax too. |
There are limited slots—480. But FCPS is different from other jurisdictions. They choose the top kids. But LCPS, APS, etc. have a hard cap on the number of kids they will pay tuition for. If more kids qualify, they are not offered slots. FCPS has no such cap. They will take any kid who qualifies. |
Not true, there are 480 slots. There are kids in FCPS who are qualified but are not accepted because the vetting process decided some kids are more qualified. But the number of finalists is always higher then the number of available slots. I am not sure how the seats would be shifted around if Loundon and APS decided that they wanted to send more kids. That is not going to be an issue, Loundon and APS seem to be moving towards no longer supporting kids attending TJ which will open more slots for FCPS. And even with that there will be kids who are finalists who do not make it into TJ. |
Did you read the post you are responding to? Even the first sentence? It say the EXACT THING you say is “not true”. All jurisdictions together can send 480 kids. All jurisdictions except FCPS have an additional cap, because their school boards pass budgets saying they will only pay tuition for X niumner of Atlanta seats. Say, LCPS has funds for 60 slots for class of 2025 (IDK the exact number— seems like 50-80 per class). If 90 LCPS kids are in the top 480, the bottom 30 will not get seats. (But I would assume would waitlist so TJ’s they can take an LCPS seat if it is turned down). Those seats will be filled by the next 30 kids on the list who aren't LCPS. FCPS has no such cap. Theoretically, all 480 admits could be FCPS. Of course, that won’t happen. But, it’s possible. It’s not possible for all 480 slots to come from LCPS, APS, etc. OP— look at it this was— TJ is desperately trying to diversify in terms of SEs and race. They always have about 10% AA, Hispanic, FARMs apply. And less than 2% of each demographic admitted. It there were quotas, the Non-white/ Hispanic , low SES numbers wouldn’t suck. Similarly, there are always more boys than girls, even though many qualified girls are turned down. This year was better, but most years it’s about 60/40. |
I did read the post. The bolded statement is problematic. FCPS does have a cap, it is what ever slots are left after you remove the APS and LCPS kids. TJ does not take anyone who qualifies, there are kids who qualify but are not selected because there are more people interested in attending then there are slots. The size of the class is fixed, there is not any leeway to that size. There will be more kids from FCPS because LCPS and APS will only fund a certain number of slots. I don't believe that there are quotas based on race, gender or religion. If you have passed the necessary exams you will be entered into the pool of candidates who are then further reviewed to select the class. They will select the candidates that they are think are the best fit, regardless or gender or race. |
| So....would a white girl have a better shot at getting in during the second "holistic" phase? |
There is no “better shot” for anyone other than working hard to get good grades and be involved in after school activities. They do not care about skin color or whether a kid is a boy or a girl. They look at the application materials. That’s it. |
No. Its a blind admissions process -- demographic info isn't considered. They still don't know you are white girl... unless you put it in the essay. If you title your essay "whitey chick who is way into tech and STEM", then they would know. But that still doesn't mean that it would help. The "holistic" phase takes your essay and teacher recommendations into account, and compares them with other applicants. Note: being a white girl shouldn't hurt you in the process either. |
| The "cap" on APS students has never been binding. |
| I’m thinking if being a white girl at TJ will help with college admissions. E.g., if MIT accepts 12 TJ kids, would they care about their race and select a white girl for diversity (assuming she is an excellent student of course, but not a winner of some national competition)? |
